"Children who live near high voltage overhead power lines may be at an
increased risk of leukaemia.A new study reveals that those living within 200
metres of the lines were about 70% more likely to develop leukaemia compared to
those who lived beyond 600 metres. Those living between 200 and 600 metres of
the high voltage pylons also had around a 20% increased risk.
But scientists have stressed they do not understand the biological reason for
the findings and point out that the results could be a coincidence.
Factors such as the type of environment where pylons are located or the type of
family that lives in those areas could be behind the findings.
The research was carried out by Dr Gerald Draper and colleagues from the
Childhood Cancer Research Group at Oxford University and Dr John Swanson, a
scientific adviser at National Grid Transco."
