Beyond Their Martian Dreams: Two Rovers Are Still Informing Experts Two Years
    Later
    By KENNETH CHANG

Two years ago today, the rover Spirit parachuted into the Martian atmosphere
and, cocooned in protective air bags, bounced and rolled to a stop.

NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory erupted in cheers and hugs when the Spirit
radioed word of its safe arrival. Three weeks later, there was more
celebration as a second rover, the Opportunity, landed safely on the other
    side of Mars.

The plan was for each rover to explore for 90 Martian days (each Martian day,
called a Sol, is almost 40 minutes longer than an Earth day). But once they
rolled off their platforms and began work, mission managers knew that the
vehicles might survive longer than 90 days.

"I really thought we would get 120," said Steven W. Squyres, a professor of
astronomy at Cornell and the mission's principal investigator. "Maybe 150, and
    absolute maximum 180."

In other words, Dr. Squyres thought that by a year and a half ago, he would be
devoting all his time to analyzing the trove of data collected. Instead, the
Spirit's jaunt has continued past its 700th Martian day. The Opportunity is
also doing well. And Dr. Squyres still spends much of his time figuring out
    where to send them.

Each has suffered some decay. The Spirit has worn out the diamond bits on its
drill, and the Opportunity has a balky shoulder joint on the arm that holds
most of its instruments, and one of its turning motors has failed. But neither
    seems close to demise
