One additional note: Page 2 par 1 suggests that "...many oil
companies..add ethyl alcohol" (ethanol) "to their gasoline as a
non-lead octane improvement additive. Such fuels are not normally
advertised as gasoline/achohol blends."

Purity requirements for ethanol fuel:

Heating oil usage--150 proof (75% ethanol/water)
Auto fuel--170 proof (85% ethanol/water) Note: Some sources suggest 160

proof or greater

Energy expenditures:

-6428.8 KCAL's for seed/plant/harvest enough corn for 1 gal
ethanol+delivery to ethanol plant
-7670 BTU's to distill 15% ethanol/water mixture to 90% solution (180
proof)

Energy calculations remaining:

Grinding/crushing 20.9 lbs of corn (1.5 lb used for malting)
Heating solution to 212F and holding for 30 minutes
Malting (sprouting 1.5 lb of corn)
Grinding/crushing 1.5 lb of sprouts
Misc--manpower, movement of fluids, etc.
