In Sweden we tend to discuss nationalism in two ways. Firstly, we want to see
nationalism as history, a phenomenon cherished in conservative circles before
the second world war-before the Social Democrats modernised Sweden. Secondly,
we see nationalism as a marginal phenomenon of our own age, though not
politically house-trained-something that the extreme right is involved in-a
phenomenon that mostly concerns the security services. Enlightened people
cannot be nationalists. What we do not see from this self-image is that
Sweden as a land of the future, a model for the world around it, is a highly
nationalistically charged notion. Without admitting it, Swedes are one of the
most nationalistic peoples of Europe. We love the image of ourselves as best
in the world, though the concept of nationalism remains taboo.
