With a daily circulation of approximately 600,000 spread evenly throughout the
country, La Repubblica is Italy’s only true national newspaper.

'La Repubblica' is currently the 2nd most important newspaper in Italy after
        the 'Corriere della Sera'.

GRUPPO EDITORIALE L'ESPRESSO: First mover retains the lead
The top performer over both one and five years was one of the first Italian
companies to develop a coherent internet strategy, by Alessandro Merli

Internet fever in financial markets may go some way towards explaining the
stellar performance of Gruppo Editoriale L'Espresso in the European performance
league table, but most of the group's activities are still in traditional media.

ost analysts credit the steady progress of L'Espresso to the management's ability
to implement a new media strategy while keeping up investment on the traditional
        side of the business.

Ninety per cent of sales, which at end-1999 reached E848m, up from E775m in the
previous year, still comes from newspapers, magazines and radio. The same is true
for net profits, which more than doubled from E25m in 1997 to the E100m projected
by media analysts for this year.

There is no question, however, that L'Espresso's internet strategy is what caught
investors' attention, and has fuelled the shares' rise to a high of E25.2 in
        February.

L'Espresso was one of the first Italian companies to develop a coherent internet
strategy, through its wholly-owned subsidiary Kataweb, now one of the largest
        internet companies in Italy.

This should achieve a turnover this year of around E50m, of which about 30 per
cent will come from advertising, 30 per cent from business-to-business projects
and 40 per cent from business-to-consumer projects.

Kataweb has now established joint ventures with Unicredito, one of Italy's
biggest banks; Amadeus, the Spanish online travel agency, and CNN, the US-based
        news channel.

It is also expanding abroad with the establishment of Kataweb Espana. Losses at
Kataweb for the first three months of this year, at just under E2m, were
relatively small by internet company standards.

The scarcity of good internet plays in the Italian market has also played a role
in the rise of L'Espresso's shares - further evidence of this is seen in the
market capitalisation of Tiscali, a relatively small internet service provider,
which surpassed that of Fiat, Italy's biggest industrial group.

But L'Espresso has not been immune from the sell-off of internet shares that
        began in March.

The company has been forced to delay a planned market flotation of Kataweb, 20
per cent of which was to be sold this month and listed on the Nuovo Mercato,
Italy's stock market for growth companies. The offer has now been postponed until
the autumn in the hope that market conditions will improve.

Some media analysts think that L'Espresso's shares may lose some of their sparkle
once Kataweb is listed and that it will be re-rated as a holding company, which
may warrant a discount in the market.

Others think that the recent slide in the price has created a good buying
opportunity, given the high quality of management and the soundness of the rest
        of the group.

The postponement of the Kataweb IPO has also raised some questions about the high
level of financing that the internet projects require. But most agree that
L'Espresso's position is solid enough to sustain Kataweb's development until the
IPO is back on the table.

In the first quarter of this year the net indebtedness of the group fell to
L172bn from L180bn at end-1999. The increased cash flow more than compensated for
        the rise in Kataweb's debt.

L'Espresso is also expanding into television. Given that Italian law prevents
publishing companies that control more than 16 per cent of the sales of daily
newspapers from owning a television station, L'Espresso has focused on satellite
        and internet TV.

One of the first channels to be launched will be Dee Jay TV, an extension of the
successful Radio Dee Jay, one of L'Espresso's three radio networks - the others
are Radio Capital and Italia Radio. All three are already on the net. Advertising
in the three radio networks jumped 65 per cent in the first quarter of this year.

Although traditional media activities tend to be overlooked in these internet-
crazy times, they are still the bedrock of L'Espresso.

The flagship is the daily newspaper La Repubblica which, while having lost the
battle to lead the country's circulation figures to Corriere della Sera, has
nevertheless seen advertising revenues grow. The local newspapers owned by the
group, mainly in the affluent north of the country, are also doing well.

The group is also planning to invest more in La Repubblica with Carlo Caracciolo,
the company's chairman, announcing that it will invest L250bn on printing the
entire newspaper in colour. This is yet another sign that L'Espresso may have
benefited from the interest in the internet but has not forgotten its roots.
