The Massive Ordnance Air Blast weapon, a 9,500-kilogram behemoth commonly
referred to as the Mother of All Bombs, has sparked a controversy among
residents of the town of Moab, Utah.

Its real name is the Massive Ordnance Air Blast, but some say the word MOAB is
just a convenient acronym for what it is more commonly called: the Mother of
          All Bombs.

The name of the 9,500-kilogram behemoth has strong biblical connotations and
has also sparked a controversy in Utah, a state known for its devout Mormon
          population.

Residents of the southern Utah town of Moab were not impressed when they
learned the name of their home was to be shared with a weapon of war.

"They could have picked a better name," Dave Sakrison, the mayor of Moab, told
the Salt Lake Tribune. "Everyone I've talked to around town is pretty much
          appalled."

The Denver Post reported that Moab officials received no reply after they sent
a letter of protest to the White House.

"It's a weapon of mass destruction. Let's face it. It's a damned big one,
too," Mr. Sakrison told the newspaper. "If they wanted to name an aircraft
carrier or an airplane after us, that would be fine."

The name MOAB was already in the American military vocabulary, previously
appearing as the acronym for the Missile Optimized Anti-Ballistic. Now it is
used as the name of the biggest conventional weapon in the U.S. arsenal.

But long before that, it was a Biblical term that could mean any one of three
things: the name of the man Moab, the name of that man's people, or the land
          of the Moabites.

Moab was the son of Lot and his eldest daughter. Trapped in a mountain cave
with her father and younger sister after fleeing the destruction of Sodom, the
woman decided the only way to continue her father's line was through
incestuous liaisons, which took place on two consecutive nights after the two
girls gave their father too much wine.

"Our father is old, and there is not a man in the Earth to come in unto us
after the manner of all the Earth," the eldest daughter told her sister.

Lot apparently "perceived not" what had taken place, being sufficiently tired
          and inebriated.

"Thus," Genesis continues, "were both the daughters of Lot with child by their
          father."

The younger daughter gave birth to a son, Ben-Ammi, the father of the
Ammonites. The eldest girl also bore a son, Moab.

The Hebrew word has been given numerous translations, from "father"
to "beautiful land" to "from my father."

The descendants of Moab, the Moabites, played key roles throughout the Bible,
occupying land southeast of the Dead Sea in what is now Jordan.

Described as proud and arrogant, the Moabites were at odds with the Israelites
when they refused to let them use their roads on the way to Canaan.

There were numerous clashes between Israel and Moab, but also periods of calm.
