UAE Urges U.S. to Help Protect Palestinians
ABU DHABI (Reuters) - The United Arab Emirates urged the United States on
Saturday to take steps to protect Palestinian civilians in the West Bank and
Gaza Strip (news - web sites) against Israeli attacks, the official WAM news
agency reported.
It said Deputy Prime Minister Sheikh Sultan bin Zaid al-Nahayan also told a
group of U.S. Congress members on a visit to Abu Dhabi that it was morally and
politically wrong to deprive Palestinians of protection.
Sheikh Sultan ``condemned the continuing Israeli attacks against Palestinians
and called on the U.S. administration to take all the necessary measures to
protect Palestinian civilians in the occupied territories,'' WAM said.
The United States last months vetoed a U.N. Security Council resolution calling
for the creation of an international force to protect Palestinians in the West
Bank and Gaza Strip.
At least 369 Palestinians have been killed in an uprising against Israeli
occupation which began last September. Thirteen Israeli Arabs and 71 Israelis
have also died in the violence.
Arab states accuse Washington of offering tacit support to Israel in the
violence, which escalated after rightist Likud leader Ariel Sharon (news - web
sites) became prime minister earlier this year.
The U.S. has dissociated itself from Israel's recent decision to end what it
called its policy of restraint toward Palestinians, but put the onus on
Palestinian President Yasser Arafat (news - web sites) to stop the clashes.
Sheikh Sultan chided the United States for its stand at the Security Council,
without mentioning the country by name.
Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Sheikh Hamdan bin Zaid al-Nahayan, in a
separate meeting with the visiting Congress members, slammed a call by some 300
U.S. lawmakers to assess U.S. ties with the Palestinian Authority (news - web
sites), and urged Congress not to submit to what it called ``blackmail
methods.''
``His highness described such a call as dangerous and said it could lead to
destabilizing the area and negatively affect all countries, including the
United States,'' WAM said.
The agency said Sheikh Hamdan suggested instead that Congress sets up a fact-
finding commission to investigate the situation in the Palestinian areas so it
can ``deal fairly with the dangerous events that are going on and which can
push the entire Middle East toward an explosion.''
Earlier this week, UAE Information Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zaid al-Nahayan
blasted Washington's support for Israel, saying this made the U.S. eligible to
be on its own list of countries supporting ``terrorism.''
