Press Release – La Leche League (La Leh-chay – Spanish for “The Milk”wink
For Immediate Distribution – No Embargo

La Leche League GB, is proud to announce that this year's National Workshop will be held at the Baltic Campus of Gateshead College, at NewcastleGateshead Quays. Gateshead College has provided fantastic support for this national charity, which concentrates on supporting mothering through breastfeeding. "We support mums to breastfeed for as long as they wish to, and to also help with the general area of raising a new human being. We believe that the dad, or partner, is also important in nurturing a child. Mothers don't just feed the baby, they actively mother them. Mums are often the best support for other mums: helping them to keep going and to enjoy their children. Part of our philosophy is accepting that babies and small children are part and parcel of a mum's life, so all our events welcome mum to attend with the little ones, and the big ones! Dads too, are welcome at larger events such as the National Workshop, and they often attend to spend time with their children whilst supporting their partner. Mums, babies and toddlers from all over the country, will be enjoying the world class facilities at the Baltic Campus, on Saturday October 16th.

Amanda Dunbar, a local Leader and a LLL GB General Director "We support mothers and babies and children being together as part of our philosophy. So babies and children are welcome at all our events. The conference staff at Gateshead College have been wonderful in understanding this, and we are delighted to be using their facilities. The catering department have also been very supportive, and their staff will be providing nutritious drinks and snacks all through the day.”

La Leche League hosts monthly meetings throughout the country, run by local mums who have studied to be `Leaders'. "We offer practical information and support to all mothers, and our monthly meetings are free to everyone. Pregnant woman are particularly welcome. Many meetings take place in Leader's homes, or the local Children’s Centre. We also run a National Helpline, staffed by volunteers, to be there when a mum needs help in making breastfeeding work for her."

On the day, whilst the mums will be enjoying a talk by the world famous expert on children and their eating habits - Dr Carlos Gonlalez. author of "My Child Won't Eat" will be flying in from Spain - the dads and partners will be free to wander the sights of Newcastle/Gateshead with the older children. Many will be visiting Seven Stories, or taking in the Dr Who exhibition. Mums with their babies and toddlers, will then have a choice of various workshops, with lots of time for tea and chats in-between.

"We often have health professionals from the local area attending our events, as our workshops on how to work with, and support mums, are very useful to them. This year, we're looking at how children eat, and how to deal with food faddiness and refusal to try new foods. This will also involve looking at weight charts, and how to reassure Mums that things are fine, and how to support them if they are not. We’ll also be looking at tongue tie, which can stop newborns breastfeeding well, and how we talk to, and listen to, mothers. Mike Brady from Baby Milk Action is also a guest, and he will be doing more general workshops for NHS staff, on how to support mums who need to use formula for whatever reason. Many of our local Leaders didn't manage to succeed to breastfeed for as long as they wanted, first or second time round. Only with mother to mother support from La Leche League or another breastfeeding support organisation, did they breastfeed successfully with their later children. So all our Leaders know how important accurate information is, for all mothers. Because of the increased health risks of formula feeding, and the little known fact that formula powder isn't sterile, it's vital that NHS staff know how to give one-to-one support to Mums who have to use it, or have chosen to do so."

The majority of the workshops taking place in the afternoon, however, will be on different aspects of breastfeeding, and supporting mothers to succeed at breastfeeding for as long as they wish to. "It's a terrible fact in Great Britain, that most mums who do start off breastfeeding, give up before they wanted to. We're here to help those mothers, each and every one, one mother at a time. We're especially pleased to be able to bring our National Workshop to the North East, as we have strong support in the local groups, and in Scotland. As an organisation, we aim to move this important event around the country, in order to make sure everyone has equal access to events. So it will be a few years before we are back this way, which is a pity, as the Baltic Campus is so perfect for our needs.

The one day event is suitable for all those interested in La Leche League, or in breastfeeding support in general, and mothers who are interested, but have never really contacted any groups, are especially welcome. "You can feel like the voice in the wilderness about mothering your child through breastfeeding. Our members often report the nicest part of attending monthly meetings, is feeling normal about breastfeeding your baby."

Tickets for the day are 27 pounds in advance, or 35 pounds on the door. You can contact events@laleche.org or check out the La Leche League GB website. Mothers or mothers to be, interested in attending local monthly meetings, can contact their local group through the website. If you need help breastfeeding today, please phone the National Helpline on 0845 120 2918.
