Lake Louise, Alberta - In the dark of night and in frigid temperatures, rescue
workers began the evacuation of about 65 people trapped in a gondola at the
Lake Louise ski resort after Sunday's World Cup super-G race.

One of the safety switches on the Grizzly Express gondola tripped out about 3pm
local time, leaving the skiers stranded above the resort, said Rick Werner,
operations manager at Lake Louise Mountain resort. Skiers were stranded in the
cabins all along the gondola that carries guests over the shoulder of Mount
      Whitehorn.

      Officials began evacuations about 5:30pm.

Eight teams of ski patrollers were working to help get those trapped out of the
      gondola cabins.

Patrollers inched along the cable on a self-propelled pulley unit, to reach the
gondola cabins. Patrollers then hooked cables and harnesses around the victims
before lowering them to the ground. The evacuees were then taken down off the
mountain by snow cat or skidoo.

      (...)

German photographers Daniel Ulmer and Ralf Schmeckenbecher of PressePhoto
Ulmer, who were riding the gondola after covering the World Cup races, were
stuck for more than four-and-a-half hours.

      (...)

Schmeckenbecher said they were stuck in the cabin for 20 minutes before
officials called up to them, telling them "it would be another 35 minutes
before we'd get down. It was more like five hours".

Though the wait was long, Schmeckenbecher called the rescuers "professional"
      and "crazy".

"He came down the pulley thing like James Bond," Schmeckenbecher said.

Some teenagers found the experience "brutal" but "fun".

Calgary's Derek Goodbrand, 22, who was snowboarding at the resort said "it was
really boring up there until the rescue started. It was really fun being
lowered in the harness". - Sapa-AP
