Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “If you ask them (about this), they declare: ‘We were only talking idly and joking.’ Say: ‘Was it at Allaah, and His Ayaat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) and His Messenger that you were mocking?’ Make no excuse; you disbelieved after you had believed” [al-Tawbah 9:65-66] Ibn Taymiyah (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: “Making fun of Allaah, His Signs and His Messenger is kufr (disbelief) and the one who does that disbelieves thereby after he had believed.” The same applies to making fun of some Sunnahs, an action which is widespread, such as making fun of the beard and the hijaab, or of shortening one’s garment, etc. Shaykh Muhammad ibn ‘Uthaymeen said in al-Majmoo’ al-Thameen, 1/63: “The matters of Divine Lordship, Prophethood, Revelation and religion are sacred matters which are to be venerated. It is not permissible for anyone to show disrespect towards them, whether by mocking them to make others laugh or to poke fun at them. If anyone does that, he is a kaafir, because this is indicative of his disrespect towards Allaah and His Messengers, Books and Laws. Whoever does that has to repent to Allaah for what he has done, because that is a kind of hypocrisy. So he has to repent to Allaah, seek His forgiveness, mend his ways and develop fear of Allaah, veneration towards Him and love for Him in his heart. And Allaah is the Source of strength. 2 – The jokes should only be truthful. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Woe to the one who tells lies to make people laugh, woe to him.” (Narrated by Abu Dawood). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, warning against this kind of behaviour which some jokers are accustomed to: “A man may say something to make his companions laugh, and he will fall into Hell as far as the Pleiades because of it.” (Narrated by Ahmad). 3 – Not scaring people Especially those who are very energetic or strong, or who are holding a weapon or a piece of iron, or who take advantage of the darkness and people’s weakness to use that as a means of scaring and alarming them. It was narrated that Abu Layla said: “The companions of Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said that they were travelling with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), and a man among them fell asleep. Some of them got a rope and tied him up, and he got scared. The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: ‘It is not permissible for a Muslim to frighten another Muslim.’” (Narrated by Abu Dawood). 4 – Mocking people by winking behind their backs or making snide remarks People vary in their ability to understand things and in their characters. Some weak people, those who like to make fun of others and wink behind their backs or make snide remarks, may find a person to be an object of fun for them and the butt of their jokes – Allaah forbid. Allaah has forbidden such behaviour in the aayah (interpretation of the meaning): “O you who believe! Let not a group scoff at another group, it may be that the latter are better than the former. Nor let (some) women scoff at other women, it may be that the latter are better than the former. Nor defame one another, nor insult one another by nicknames. How bad is it to insult one’s brother after having Faith” [al-Hujuraat 49:11] Ibn Katheer said in his Tafseer: “What is meant here is looking down on them, belittling them or making fun of them. This is haraam and is counted as one of the characteristics of the hypocrites.” Some people make fun of a person’s appearance, manner of walking or vehicle. But there is the fear that Allaah may requite the one who makes fun of others because of that. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, “Do not express malicious joy towards your brother’s misfortune, for Allaah may have mercy on him and you may be stricken by the thing you made fun of.” (Narrated by al-Tirmidhi). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) warned against mocking people and hurting their feelings, because that is the path that leads to hatred and grudges. He (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The Muslim is the brother of another Muslim, he does not wrong him, let him down or look down upon him. Taqwa (piety, awareness and fear of Allaah) is here” – and he pointed to his chest three times – “It is sufficient evil for a man to look down upon his Muslim brother. Every Muslim is sacred to another Muslim, his blood, his property and his honour.” (Narrated by Muslim) 5 – The jokes should not be excessive. Some people joke too much and it becomes a habit for them. This is the opposite of the serious nature which is the characteristic of the believers. Joking is a break, a rest from ongoing seriousness and striving; it is a little relaxation for the soul. ‘Umar ibn ‘Abd al-‘Azeez (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: “Fear joking, for it is folly and generates grudges.” Imaam al-Nawawi (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: “The kind of joking which is forbidden is that which is excessive and persistent, for it leads to too much laughter and hardening of the heart, it distracts from remembrance of Allaah, and it often leads to hurt feelings, generates hatred and causes people to lose respect and dignity. Non-Jewish observers and writers on Zionism who see political Zionism only as an attempt at "national renewal" rather than an effort to establish a unified Jewish leadership as well as Jewish rule over the world, are therefore incorrect. The confusion of political Zionism with Palestine can be understood only through the Jewish prophecies in which Jewry is assured of control over all the goods of this world. Knowing that the time was near, and would culminate in taking possession of Palestine, Zionism developed the nonsensical notion of an "historic claim" to the "promised land," to which Jews "without any outside pressure" would gradually immigrate. In the ideology of political Zionism, Palestine fulfilled the role of an indispensable part of prophecy, just as certain rules are the guarantee for success of the magical ceremonies of primitive peoples. Political Zionism never intended Palestine to be the destination of all Jews, rather it merely wants to make Palestine the center of Jewish world policy. That must naturally be protected by a strong Jewish population. The Zionist publication Jüdische Rundschau wrote: "No one at any time has proposed that all Jews today should emigrate to Palestine." Nabum Sokolow, Weizmann's colleague and current chairman of the Zionist Committee, said it clearly in 1921: "The Jewish people wants to return to Palestine, the Jewish people will have its center in Palestine. Large parts of Jewry will live as a Jewish periphery in the world. They must be cared for, their dignity and their national rights must be assured." This is also clear from the text of the state treaty Jewry concluded with England, the so-called Balfour Declaration: "His Majesty's Government favors the establishment of a national home in Palestine for the Jews, and we will make the greatest efforts to reach this goal, although it is clearly understood that nothing will be done that will affect the civil and religious rights of non-Jewish communities in Palestine or the rights and political standing of Jews in any other country." That provides a correction to the idealization of Zionism, which springs from a different race. From a political standpoint, it would be in the interests of the whole world, of all the host peoples, if the Jews now scattered thoughout the whole world were to voluntarily emigrate to some habitable territory. If political Zionism were not interested in such a solution to the Jewish Question, it would be in the interests of the host peoples to point it in that positive direction. The only question would be whether Palestine is the proper gathering place, which no one would likely maintain. Palestine is not able to absorb all the Jews in the world, entirely aside from the fact of increasing Arab opposition to Jewish infiltration. The Arabs are after all the undisputed owners of the land. But what other territory would be appropriate? And at the instant Palestine ceased to be the the goal of Jewish emigration, political Zionism would collapse, since Palestine is seen as a means for the fulfillment of prophecy. Without that, the whole enterprise would lose its point. Jewry itself would make the most passionate and bitter attacks, and before long any undertaking that ignored Palestine would be crippled by Jewry itself. Palestine incorporates for Jewry its special position. Wojna nie konwencjonalna: zamachy na ludnosc cywilna Tel- Avivu, Hajfy lub Jerozolimy - nie widac dwoch wrogich armii, w roznych mundurach, walczacych ze soba. Kiedy zamachowiec, ginac sam, zabija ludzi w autobusach, na dworcach, restauracjach - media francuskie mowia o ilosci zabitych, pisza o pospiesznym pochowku, pokazuja sceny ludzi w szoku, rannych, krew, placz i lament. Kiedy gina Palestynczycy te same media pisza o mordach popelnianych przez wojska izraelskie na ludziach walczacych o wyzwolenie swojego kraju. Slysze, obserwuje jak szybko zmienia sie jezyk, jakiego uzywaja dziennikarze. Slowa coraz mocniejsze, coraz bardziej niesprawiedliwe i nie adekwatne. Sceny pokazywane w telewizyjnym dzienniku sa bardzo przekonywujace. Przypominam sobie sprawe zdjecia w "Liberation": mlody czlowiek z zakrwawiona twarza i izraelski policjant. Podpis: "Izraelski policjant bijacy Palestynczyka". Okazalo sie, ze pobitym byl mlody amerykanski Zyd, ktoremu izraelski policjant pomogl, chroniac go przed czterema Palestynczykami, ktorzy go wyciagneli z samochodu i zaczeli bic. Dzieki sprawnosci adwokata, "Liberation" zostalo ukarane grzywna wysokosci 70.000 FF i zmuszone do przeproszenia zarowno pobitego, jak i policjanta. Kto pamieta jaka role odegralo radio w dojsciu Hitlera do wladzy ? Coz znaczylyby jego slowa bez mocy, ktora nadalo im radio ? Dzisiaj do gazet i radia, dochodzi telewizja, obraz rozpowszechniajacy sie rownie szybko jak slowa droga radiowa. Dochodzi Internet. Jak walczyc z taka siecia masowego przekazu ? Kiedy opuszczalam Paryz dziesiec dni wczesniej, towarzyszyly mi te rozwazania podczas lotu pelnym samolotem. Z trudem udalo mi sie zdobyc bilet na lot w dniu, ktory wybralam sobie na podroz. Pierwszy raz w zyciu bylam w Izraelu. Zwiedzilam Tel-Aviv, Jaffo, Jerozolime, Hajfe, Akko, kibuc imienia Mordechaja Anielewicza, bylam nad Jeziorem Ginezaret, na pikniku w Ein Chemed i obejrzalam hotel w Aszkelonie. Nie jezdzilam autobusami. Bywalam w restauracjach i w kawiarniach. Kobietom zagladano do toreb i kontrolowano kazdego wchodzacego tak, jak przy wejsciu do samolotu. Wojsko mialam codziennie w salonie, kiedy syn kuzynki wracal na noc. Nauczylam sie rozpoznawac samoloty wojskowe, helikoptery. Na polnocy Izraela, w drodze do Jeziora Ginezaret , widzialam czolgi na ciezarowkach. Nauczylam sie jednego slowa po hebrajsku: rega. Wojny nie widzialam. O tym co dzielilam z ludzmi, u ktorych mieszkalam, ktorych odwiedzalam, o niepokoju matek i zon, drzacych dloniach, ustach, zmeczonych oczach - o tym nie pisze, to zbyt intymne, to mozna tylko razem przezyc. Pisanie o cierpieniu ludzi, nawet jezeli jest prawda, to jak nakrecenie filmu bez ich wiedzy i pokazywanie go. Przyjeli mnie w trudnym dla siebie momencie, cieszyli sie ze przyjechalam i pokazali mi kraj. Defensive Operations – activity that is meant to put obstacles in the way of terrorist squads and disrupt their attempts to launch terror attacks. Punitive Measures – legal activity, which is aimed at punishment of the planners and the operatives of terror attacks, as well as the supporters of terrorist organizations The first two components of counter terrorist activity can be distinguished from one another in their application to different stages of a terror attack. The offensive activities are aimed mainly to prevent the implementation of planning in the primary organizational stages or the training stage of terror attacks. Defensive activities aim at disrupting attempted terror attacks while the squads are on their way to the target and at the beginning of the attack. The punitive measures, on the other hand, apply to the attack in all its stages, from the planning stage to the actual implementation of the attack. Goals. Following are some of the aims at the basis of Israeli counter terrorist activities: Minimizing the extent of terrorist activity and the resulting damage - Since the state of Israel must contend with terror organizations which are often located in territories outside of its control, it is not within her power to destroy the organizations through classic military action. The aim, therefore, is to reduce the number of terror attacks and to minimize direct and secondary damage. In this context, Itzhak Rabin, then Defense Minister stated in September 1989 that: “The goal we set ourselves in the campaign against terror is not one of elimination, but to minimize our vulnerability and delivery of the strongest possible blows against terrorists…” Damage to terrorist squads - As a result of the ambition to minimize the extent of terrorist activity, the IDF centralizes its efforts by attacking terrorist squads in their different organizational stages: in training camps, during terrorist activities, on their way to Israeli territory, during their border crossing or even during their stay in Israel itself. Going after terrorist leaders and planners - Another objective of the counter terrorist strategy is a precise and methodical strike at the leaders of terrorist organizations and the functionaries directly responsible for the planning and execution of terror attacks. Strikes at terror infrastructure - Striking at the military infrastructure of terrorist groups in their own backyard forces them to commit extensive resources to rebuild the affected areas, and this is likely to disrupt their plans for terror assaults in Israel. Undermining terrorist morale - Counter terrorist operations are directed, inter alia, at the morale of terrorists and their supporters. Terror groups are constantly active in enlistment of new recruits, and they require a very wide array of supporters and collaborators. Successful anti-terror campaigns undermine their self-confidence, block enlistment efforts and deter collaborators. Operative Measures Following the decision to carry out a strike against terrorist bases, decision- makers are faced with several options, including aerial bombardment, land incursion, naval operations, and pinpoint strikes against terrorist leaders. Air Force bombardments - The most readily accessible means likely to meet most of the requirements of the war on terror, and without any need for complex advance preparations, is aerial bombardment. Among the targets bombed by the airforce in recent years were command centers, training bases, staging areas, equipment and ammunition depots, living quarters, military positions, bunkers, and special facilities such as terrorist radio stations. The use of the airforce against terrorist targets, has lead, to some extent, to the adaptation of terrorist organizations, and their establishing policies aimed at reducing the number of casualties and air force efficiency. Among these policies we will mention: Settling next to civilian population centers – This policy is supposed to make it harder for the airforce to hit terrorist targets without loss of life or property of civilians. No extended stay in bases - During a “deep attack” of the airforce in Lebanon in October 1986 (southeast of Tripoli), according to Palestinian sources 7 terrorists were injured and 2 citizens. “One of the military commanders of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine – Abu-Haled - explained the small number of casualties: there is a policy that forbids the terrorists to stay in the base for fear of an attack.” Among the additional disadvantages of an aerial attack there is the problem of accuracy. Despite the professionalism of IDF pilots, the timing, and the accuracy of its operations, during the years of its activity against terrorist targets, there were a few cases where the hits were inaccurate. This lack of accuracy at best results in an incomplete mission. However, in the worst cases it can cost the lives of Lebanese citizens. Ground Incursions - There are circumstances in which aerial bombardments have limitations: For example well-fortified positions, caves cut into a mountainside, proximity of civilian population and thick concentration of anti- aircraft canons. The drawbacks sometimes result in a decision to use infantry. The land-based raid enables the destruction of a military target situated in a heavily populated area, while minimizing the risks to civilians. However, this type of counter terrorism involves a great risk to the lives of the fighters, penetrating hostile territory, carrying out their task and retreating back to Israeli territory. The number of fighters involved in such campaigns is much larger than those required for aerial bombardment. Even raids that involve only small units may, for a number of reasons, develop into campaigns much larger than was originally intended. Naval Attacks - Offensive action from the sea usually accompanies air force bombardment or land raids. Navy ships in this scenario serve as mobile sea- going artillery, “softening” targets before incursion by ground forces, or as an adjunct to aerial bombardments. As part of its offensive action, the IDF has also used the navy against naval bases and boats belonging to terror organizations, in order to disrupt their efforts to ferry operatives and weapons into Lebanon. Strikes Against Terrorist Leaders - While attacks on field targets may succeed despite a deviation from the plan during its practical implementation, hitting terrorist leaders demands precise intelligence, extremely complex planning and flawless execution. After the September 1985 air force bombing in Tunis, the late Yitzhak Rabin then Minister of Defense defined the policy of striking at terrorist leaders: “My understanding of terror is simple: there is no solution based on a single blow, there is no campaign that can solve the problem. What is needed, using preventative strikes and other methods, is to reduce vulnerability. The second element is to mete out the maximum punishment to perpetrators and their handlers. I am not referring here to personal terror against someone, but rather to a viewpoint. We must strike not just at the field and operational level, but also the command, control, and financial systems.” Pursuing terrorist leaders therefore has a dual function: prevention of future terror, and punishment of those responsible for the attacks. Seven students from the college, four males and three females were trying to pass on the rough mountains in order to avoid Huwara checkpoint. The Israeli occupation soldiers were hiding somewhere, they suddenly appeared, and ordered the taxi driver to stop. They then ordered all the passengers to get out of the taxi, and ordered the taxi driver to bring all their identification cards. The soldiers began to check each of the identities. They ordered the male students to take off their shirts. They then called in female soldiers to search the female students. The Israeli soldiers then ordered the male students to start waving their arms for more than fifteen minutes, when any of them became tired the soldiers began cursing and laughing at him. A soldier was checking identification cards; he called over one of the students who was leaving Nablus for Ramallah in order to spend the Eid holiday with his family. The student is studying at the College of Engineering. The soldier became angry with him and said, “Do you know that Yahia Ayash was an engineer and a terrorist? “Are you similar to him?” The student replied, “No”. He then told the student not to look at his eyes and only look at the ground. The soldier then began speaking at the Palestinian girls, he said they were prostitutes and did not forget to mention that all Arabs are bad. The same soldier then proceeded to insult the male students; he asked one of them to play a game with him in which the student holds out his hands and the soldier hits them. The student already knew this game and at first he refused to play fearing he would be beaten by the soldier. But he was forced to play anyway. The soldier then told him, “Now it is your turn, hit my hands”. The student however was afraid to do this; he did not trust the soldier. The soldier was not going to let this game end and when the student finally continued and touched the soldier's hands everything became clear. The soldier then badly beat the student until he was bleeding. A new victim was then chosen, he was told to curse at his friends, when he refused he was beaten as well. The student was then told that he had to play a game in which they would discover the presence of god. The soldier started to insult Islam while playing with his gun. He told the student that he would shoot him in his head in order to send him directly to heaven and check if it is correct that there is god and paradise or not. The soldier put his gun to the student's head and fired, but the soldier had already removed the bullets out of his magazine. The student was scared and horrified. The fourth student's turn came next; he was ordered to answer questions such as why Islam requires females to wear scarves on their heads. The student answered that it is an old tradition. The soldier replied that it was old fashioned and shows the backwardness of our society. The soldier looked at one of the girls and made nasty complements about her. He asked her to either sleep with him or one of the male students. She refused, so he then asked one of the male students to sleep with her. He refused as well and was badly beaten as punishment for not complying. The students were then left to wait for more than one hour while the soldiers left with their identification cards. They then returned in a jeep and began circling around the frightened students, the students were ordered to stand in front of the jeep's motor, which was very hot. The driver of the jeep was putting his foot on the accelerator in order to make it even hotter while the students were forced to stand just centimeters from it. However, physicists have found it difficult to make the single-photon sources needed in most variants of quantum cryptography. Now, Frédéric Grosshans of the Institute of Optics in Orsay, France, and colleagues have shown experimentally how to encode data using pulses containing several hundred photons. Their technique remains secure even when the pulses are degraded during transmission (F Grosshans et al. 2003 Nature 421 238). In cryptography, the data in a message is encoded by multiplying it with a certain number. To decode the message the receiver must apply a second number, related to the first, called a key. But in order for cryptography to work, the key must be kept secret. In most forms of quantum cryptography, the key consists of a sequence of single photons. To set the value of the key, the sender, known conventionally as Alice, chooses the polarization of each photon from among several non- orthogonal directions, and then transmits the photon. Quantum mechanics dictates that the polarization of a given photon is retained if the receiver, known as Bob, measures it in the same direction as Alice. But if Bob measures it in a different direction, he will only measure the correct value about half of the time. To work out the key, Bob measures the polarization of each photon in whichever direction he chooses and telephones Alice to tell her which measurements he carried out. Another 104 people were injured in the blast, among them nine Arabs. The Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades claimed responsibility for the attack. Chai Siang Yang came to Israel four months ago from Putian in Fujian Province in southeastern China. Yang worked as a builder for the Aronson Company which constructs buildings in Jerusalem. Monthly, he would send money back to his family in China. Yang lived in an apartment in the Pisgat Zeev neighborhood of Jerusalem with other workers from China. He and his friends were accustomed to shopping in Mahane Yehuda on Friday afternoons, to take advantage of the low pre-Sabbath prices. "They told us that Yang was working far from the war area," said Yang's older brother. Just after 2:30 PM on Sunday afternoon, during the Passover holiday, the terrorist entered the popular Matza restaurant in the Neve Sha'anan district near the Grand Canyon mall. The explosion tore the roof off the one-story building, and blew out the windows, instantly killing 14 people, and leaving horrific scenes of people on fire, and people with lost limbs. Over 40 people were injured. Orly Ofir was having lunch with her mother and two sisters at the Matza restaurant when the blast occurred. Her sister Roni was lightly injured. Although Orly spoke to them in the ambulance, she died of her wounds shortly after arriving at the hospital. Orly was a high school student, and played on the Maccabi Haifa girls' soccer team. Yesterday the head of the team, Shuki Frankel, described Orly as an outstanding player. Her friends described her as a very special girl, with a lively, cheerful personality. Orly Ofir was buried in Haifa. As Germany's defeat loomed during the finals months of World War II, Adolf Hitler increasingly lapsed into delusional fits of fantasy. Albert Speer, in his prison writings, recounts an episode in which a maniacal Hitler "pictured for himself and for us the destruction of New York in a hurricane of fire." The Nazi fuehrer described skyscrapers turning into "gigantic burning torches, collapsing upon one another, the glow of the exploding city illuminating the dark sky." An approximation of Hitler's hellish vision came true on Sept. 11, when terrorists destroyed the Twin Towers in New York, killing nearly 3,000 people. But it was not Nazis or even neo-Nazis who carried out the attack, which allegedly came at the hands of foreign Muslim extremists. Still, in the aftermath of the slaughter, white supremacists in America and Europe applauded the suicide attacks and praised Osama bin Laden, the mastermind of the massacre. An official of America's premier neo-Nazi group, the National Alliance, said he wished his own members had "half as much testicular fortitude." The awestruck leader of another U.S. Nazi group called the terrorists "VERY BRAVE PEOPLE." Neofascist youth in France celebrated the event that evening with champagne at the headquarters of the extreme right Front National. Jan Kopal, head of the Czech National Social Bloc, declared at a rally in Prague that bin Laden was "an example for our children." German neo- Nazis, some wearing checkered Palestinian headscarves, rejoiced at street demonstrations while burning an American flag. Horst Mahler, a former left-wing terrorist and prominent member of the neo-Nazi National Democratic Party (NPD) in Germany proclaimed his solidarity with the terrorists and said America had gotten what it deserved. What's going on here? For decades, American extremists have lumped Arabs in with dark-skinned "mud people." In Europe, neo-Nazis have been implicated in countless xenophobic attacks on Arabs, Turks and other Muslims. Extremist parties on both sides of the Atlantic hope to bar entrance to non-white immigrants. The peculiar bond between white nationalist groups and certain Muslim extremists derives in part from a shared set of enemies: Jews, the United States, race-mixing, ethnic diversity. It is also very much a function of the shared belief that they must shield their own peoples from the corrupting influence of foreign cultures and the homogenizing juggernaut of globalization. Both sets of groups also have a penchant for far-flung conspiracy theories that caricature Jewish power. But there is more. Even before World War II, Western fascists began to forge ideological and operational ties to Islamic extremists. Over the years, these contacts between Nazis and Muslim nationalists developed into dangerous networks that have been implicated in a number of bloody terrorist attacks in Europe and the Middle East. Wealthy Arab regimes have financed extremists in Europe and the United States, just as Western neo-Nazis have helped to build Holocaust denial machinery in the Arab world. In the 1970s, Saudi Arabia hired an American neo-Nazi as a lobbyist in the United States. In the 1980s, U.S. neo- Nazi strategist Louis Beam openly called for a linkup of America's far right with the "liberation movements" of Libya, Syria, Iran and Palestine. In the 1990s, an American Black Muslim was convicted in a plot to bomb the United Nations and other New York landmarks that was masterminded by a blind Egyptian cleric (see sidebar: "Strange Bedfellows"). Just last year, a meeting sponsored by a U.S. holocaust denial group brought together Arab and Western extremists in Jordan (see sidebar "Between Friends"). Although links like these illustrate the ties between Muslim extremists and Americans, such ties are far more developed in Europe. But since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, there are a number of signs including a spate of articles by American neo-Nazis that have appeared in Islamic publications and Web sites that an operational alliance may be taking shape in the United States as well. Banking for Allah Perhaps the best contemporary snapshot of this Nazi-Islamist extremist axis comes in the person of one Ahmed Huber, a neo-Nazi whose home in a suburb of Berne was raided by Swiss police on Nov. 8, after U.S. officials had identified him as a linchpin in the financial machinations of Osama bin Laden. The raid was part of a coordinated law enforcement dragnet that seized records from the offices of Al Taqwa, an international banking group. Al Taqwa, which literally means "Fear of God," had been channeling funds to Muslim extremist organizations around the world, including Hamas, a group active in the Israeli- occupied territories. Huber, a former journalist who converted to Islam and changed his first name from Albert, served on the board of Nada Management, a component of Al Taqwa. After Swiss authorities froze the firm's assets and questioned Huber, the 74-year-old denounced Washington for doing the bidding of "Jew Zionists" who "rule America." In January, Nada Management announced that it had gone into liquidation. A well-known figure in European neofascist circles, Huber "sees himself as a mediator between Islam and right-wing groups," according to Germany's Office for the Protection of the Constitution. Portraits of Hitler and SS chief Heinrich Himmler adorn the walls of Huber's office, alongside photos of Islamic political leaders and a picture of Jean-Marie Le Pen, the present-day boss of the French Front National. In accordance with his self-proclaimed mission to unite Muslim fundamentalists and extreme right-wing forces in Europe and North America, Huber has traveled widely and proselytized at numerous gatherings. In Germany, he speaks often at events hosted by the neo-Nazi National Democratic Party, which publicly welcomed the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Huber also befriended British author David Irving and other Holocaust deniers while frequenting "revisionist" conclaves. A bin Laden Fan in Chicago At the same time, Huber made the rounds of the radical Islamic circuit in Western countries. In June 1994, he spoke about the "evils of the Jews" at a mosque in Potomac, MD. (just outside Washington, D.C.), where videotapes of Huber's speeches are on sale. During a subsequent visit to Chicago, he attended a private assembly that brought together, in Huber's words, "the authentic Right and the fighters for Islam." Huber told journalist Richard Labeviere that "major decisions were taken [in Chicago] … [T]he reunification is under way." Huber acknowledges meeting al-Qaeda operatives on several occasions at Muslim conferences in Beirut, Brussels and London. He has been quoted in the Swiss media as saying that bin Laden's associates "are very discreet, well- educated and highly intelligent people." The U.S. government claims that Huber's banking firm helped bin Laden shift financial assets around the world. But Huber denies any involvement in terrorist activities. He insists Al Taqwa was engaged in charitable work, providing aid for social services that benefited needy Muslims. Described as "the financial heart of the Islamist economic apparatus," Al Taqwa is intertwined with the Muslim Brotherhood, a longstanding, far-right cult whose emblem is a Koran crossed by a sword.
