bluteau 23.07.05, 11:46 Hi! I've been living in Poland (Poznań) for 11 years - so far I've met a number of fellow Canadians but none from Montreal. Have you guys run into any Montrealers? Odpowiedz Link czytaj wygodnie posty
asia9111 Re: Any Montrealers in Poland? 23.07.05, 21:57 Hi there! I am not from Montral, but... Montreal has been by far my most favorite place on this continent. Do you work for AMU? I went to school in Poznan, although I am originally from Gdansk. After years in CT/NJ/NYC, I am now in Florida and will probably go back to Gdansk in a year or so. I have been to Montrael maybe 12 times, and will go again at the drop of the hat. I went when it was minus 30, and plus 37 Celcius, so I have seen it in different circumstances. Welcome and enjoy the forum! Odpowiedz Link
bluteau Re: Any Montrealers in Poland? 27.07.05, 13:52 Hi Asia, I'm glad you like Montreal so much. I'm not very objective, but I agree with you that it's a great city. I miss the atmosphere, the buildings, the night and cultural life, but fortunately not the general attitude of most Montrealers. I haven't been back in 11 years and have heard from my parents that a lot has changed (for the worse). It's funny you should ask if I work for AMU - from October I'll be a student What are you doing in Florida? Is it really the geriatric capital of North America (heard there are also lots of retired Quebecois there)? Odpowiedz Link
asia9111 Re: Any Montrealers in Poland? 27.07.05, 15:52 Hi: I work for a university, so not too much need for a geriatric ward Although the biologically young, Southern Americans seem to act 'old' and complain about everything like an old lady. I guess after years in the Northeast, and working in NYC, I have little patience for 'the dog ate my homework' approach to life The biggest change in Montreal (viewed by me--the non-French speaking tourist) could be felt during the referendum several years ago. Anywhere you went, there was this heavy atmosphere of political discussions all around. Quite a few people I know left for Toronto, claiming they feared getting stuck and not being able to find work as the ones who voted 'no' and, most often, not speaking too much French, or none at all. I have 2 prints I bought from a street artist-one is showing a typical staircase, snow covered, of Rue St. Denis. It does make a statement in Florida, believe me! Actually, I bought it because it reminded me of a street in Gdansk, and I did like the fact that it was snow covered. I do miss the strong coffee of Montreal, the small cafes, pastries and the Eurpoean feel of the city. I might have to go back some time soon! What are you going to study at AMU? Odpowiedz Link
bluteau Re: Any Montrealers in Poland? 27.07.05, 16:35 Working at a university - that's my aspiration in life... Yeah, I know what you mean about the referendum - I'm from a bilingual family (my father is french Canadian and my mother English Canadian) and my brother and I were always treated like half-breeds, torn between two political extremes. I myself am against Quebec seperatism, but at the same time I can understand, and in some cases relate to, what French Canadians feel and fear. Luckily, I speak both English and French, so I never had to choose and never had any problems communicating with anyone. I've enrolled at the English Philology department (yes, I have my reasons). Do you think you'll live abroad all your life or do you plan to return to Poland? Odpowiedz Link
asia9111 Re: Any Montrealers in Poland? 27.07.05, 17:54 English Philology???Welcome to the club I actually wrote in one of the posts, that I am coming back to Pl probably by the end of 2006. If it were not for the fear of unemployment, I would have been back already. Anyhow, I do not see myself here for much longer, all my family are in PL, so I am getting ready to take this step. I have had to do some thinking about this-I do have a pretty good job here, but I do not want to put in 60 hrs. a week much longer, and miss all that is called 'life'. I am just worried about the job prospects. Odpowiedz Link
bluteau Re: Any Montrealers in Poland? 28.07.05, 10:44 Yeah, with jobs it's tough. But that seems to be a problem nearly everywhere. The only difference is that if you have a job in Poland, you're usually overworked and underpaid. So what do you think you'd like to do here, jobwise? Will you try to get a place at a university, or rather lower schools or even the private schooling sector? I'd like to stay on at the Poznan University when I graduate, but I've noticed that all the foreigners in the department are given low, restrictive positions. For this reason my family is seriously looking into possibilities outside Poland. Odpowiedz Link

I'm not sure we need to know about their command of "French", thanks all the same. Odpowiedz Link
