portulaco Re: What's your likes and dislikes about Poland? 25.07.05, 11:26 Portulaco From Portugal Likes: Poles are sympatic people and interested in other cultures. Open spaces and Polish landscape. Geographical situation (very central, close to every important European capitals). Polish gastronomy with few exceptions. FSO Syrena and FSO Warszawa Wodka zubrowka, indeed good! ... and of course Polish women are the most beautiful and interesting in all Europe. Dislikes: Polish roads could be better, let's see if EU money will be properly used. Some agressive Polish drivers though I shouldn't complain too much since Portuguese are the same. Oscipek (niestety) Football fanatics and hooligans, they don't like football they like vandalism and wodka most of all. Viva a Polonia! Odpowiedz Link

portulaco Re: What's your likes and dislikes about Poland? 25.07.05, 13:24 At least in this country you can see many girls reading books and knowing where Portugal is, for example. I don't like smoked fish in galaretka. I forgot about kabanos, really good. Odpowiedz Link
ewakot Re: What's your likes and dislikes about Poland? 25.07.05, 19:37 Hah, that's exactly like my husband (he's English)! One Christmas in Poland he ended up with a tail of a fat carp sticking out of a dish of aspic jelly on the table right in front of him, and he wholeheartedly despises aspic jelly! Funny, can't understand why... Odpowiedz Link

Actually, I am happly married to one of them.Although living in USA I dated women of different nationalities. But I decided to settle with Polish lady because we have more in common. Why do I care? Cultural aspects of our live have a special importance to me. It's always nice to hear compliments and even a critique of ones culture. Odpowiedz Link
waldek1610 agagaby, you didn't understand my question.. 26.07.05, 02:53 I simply asked the Portugesse guy, for details. I didn't mean to say that polish woment were not "interesting". Quite the oposite. I'm very glad thought that foreign guys are envious about our Polish women! Don't you agree? Odpowiedz Link

bartis_ervin Re: What's your likes and dislikes about Poland? 25.07.05, 15:12 There are quite many very good qulaities of Polish and Poland. I think portulaco mentioned a couple. I subscribe to his opinion Likes: how Polish stick together when there is an outside "enemy", their way of work, their openess and the fact that they like travelling and they are everywhere. Literally, I haven't visited any country where I did not meet Polish. Dislikes: 1. Fotball hooligans, guys with shaved head, those who participated in "Parada Normalnosci". I don't have a car, so sometimes in tram I have to be afraid when these guys get on. And I don't like this feeling. After "Parada Normalnosci" some drunk particpants in the tram wanted to beat up an old guy, just because of fun and just because they could. When I was reading Mrozek's "Dziennik powrotu" (I hope my spelling is correct" I didn't understand what he wanted to say when he was writing that at times you have to be afraid in teh streets. If you haven't read please do, especially the story "Smith and Wesson and me" 2. The fact that at times when people want to say something negative about the other, they just call the other person jew. Just check some grafitti's made by fotball hooligans (especially in Lodz). 3. Stereotypes about other Eastern European countries, in this case Romania. I'm Hungarian, not Romanian, but I was born and lived for 20 years in Romania, so it obviously hurts when i hear "mamy rumunskie warunki" or other similar things. It is true that Romania is poorer than Poland and it is true that at a certain moment Poland was flooded with beggers from Romania. Something like this does not qualify a nation or a country. My favourite is when my wife says to another Polish person that she lived in Bucharest for a year.. I "love" the face that people make and then they ask: was it safe? and so on. Portulaco mentioned the not so great roads, but that's ok because with some funds can be fixed (and probably will be fixed), but what I wrote at 1 and 2 cannot be really fixed... at least not with funds. waldek1610 ethnic jokes 26.07.05, 03:01 Bartis, Going back to the saying;"Romanian' living condition", I know it can make you feel bad. But just think who you're talking to right now. The jokes about "stupid Polack" were widespread in US untill as late as 1980. Even recenly I'm being told by some folks that I used to work with that I never take shower, or if I take one I urinate on the fan, because supposedly I Poles didn't invent the shower head yet. But we don't care of cause, we are quite civilised folks any way you look at it. Odpowiedz Link
bartis_ervin Re: ethnic jokes 26.07.05, 09:39 The funny thing that it makes feel a bit bad even if I am Hungarian. Funny in the sense that probably as you know, as nations, Hungarians and Romanians are not the best friends (the issue of the Trianon treaty). I guess you are right what you said, but two wrongs won't make a right. And I didn't say that it hurts me so much that I cannot sleep at night (I hope it didn't sound like this), but at times it is uncomfortable. My family name is Bartis, so you can just call me Ervin Odpowiedz Link
waldek1610 French Kiss- not what you think... 27.07.05, 00:32 I used to serve in the US Marines, and I just remembered one Hungarian guy that I met in the marines during some field exercises we had. His last name was Kiss and coincidently he shared the barracks room with american guy named French. Funny thing is that admin. put them in the same room on purpose, so the sign on their door red "French Kiss". And it was said that the Commanding Officer while inspecting their room said " what the hell is that s..t?....lol Odpowiedz Link
gustavinho Re: What's your likes and dislikes about Poland? 26.07.05, 10:41 Hi there! I`m Gustavo and i`m Brazilian, lived in Gliwice for almost 9 months, then came back to Amsterdam where i had been living for a couple of years, now i`m living in Warsaw, where i hope to work as a translator/teacher of foreign languages. I like: the Polish language, beautiful and difficult, but it doesn`t matter the harder the better, i don`t bother about the challenge of mastering it! Polish girls are in general beautiful, although not the prettiest in the world,Estonians are the most beatiful ones! Polish hospitality, bigos and the general attitude Poles show towards life, their friendliness, warmth I dislike the fact that many girls here smoke,in Brazil it`s not like that. The aggressive shaved guys, golabki,Polish winter,nasty/dishonest train inspectors (they love to overcharge foreigners and subtract money as much as they can ,even if you`ve done nothing wrong,i mean paying the additional fee, after getting on an express train instead of a normal passenger train, they can may charge you 4/5 times higher than the actual fee, a ripoff!) waldek1610 Re: What's your likes and dislikes about Poland? 27.07.05, 00:44 I see you have a thing for Estonian women, a lot of guys are into Asian others into French. It depends what does it for you. I think besides Polish women, Japanesse, Korean and South-East Asians are very feminine as well. Well the Central and Latin America is known of the juvenile thieves. The scenario looks like that; you are stroling along the town looking lost because your tourist, the kid runs into you and i the split second his hands are around your waist and in your pockets, he says "sorry". And you don't know you just been robed untill you reach for your walet. Odpowiedz Link

waldek1610 Re: What's your likes and dislikes about Poland? 28.07.05, 07:19 Actually, I have lived in Japan for one year and I observed that neither Japanese man or women speak less than elswhere in the World. It seems though they put more attention to quality of their speach, in the west including Poland people beat around the bush and complain a lot. Odpowiedz Link
