Primary schools with classes in English in Warsaw

26.07.05, 12:14
Hi everybody! We are hoping to move permanently to Poland next year. My
husband is English and our two kids' (who are 9 and 4) first language is
English. The eldest, Nicola, can speak fairly good Polish, but would not cope
in a Polish school. James - well, he'll pick it up fast enough (I hope), but
I'd rather send them to a similar standard school.
Now I've got a problem. I cannot afford the British School or the American
School - has anybody heard of any primary school with classes in English?
World Hill Academy is gone, there's something called Meridian, has anybody
heard of it? And if so, what?
I will appreciate any - sensible - comments and advice.
Uncle Davey, with two pre-schoolers (if I remember correctly...), what are
you going to do when the time comes?
Warm regards!

Ewa

      Ewa,

I think it would be good for your kids to go to a polish schoolsmile I think kids
are better at adapting than adults! Why not give it a try?
Polish schools are of good standard. In my opinion, better than many
primary/middle schools in the UK or US.

If you insist on an English speaking school/class please try at the British
Council they may have some info. Or

Here is a list of schools with English as the language of instruction. I
complied this list for somebody that was looking for employment at such a
school. If you are looking for primary school with English as the language of
instruction, than a private school is your only option. Tuition in these
schools is either high or very high - I'd suggest sending kids to a Polish
school (either public - state-owned or community) - especially since many of
them provide with better quality of education.

Thanks very much for your help guys! I know that it would probably be better
academically (not to mention our pockets!) to send the children to a Polish
school, but I am feeling terribly guilty at putting them through this major
upheaval, so I'm trying to spare them as much as I can... Particularly Nicola
is very sensitive and I can see it in her Polish Saturday school here, she
clams up if she can't understand or says something funny... there are quite a
few children whose first language is Polish in this school, so she feels a bit
stupid not being able to keep up. I do not want to make her dislike school from
the start... she loves her English school here.

However, most of these schools' fees are too high for me to consider. So I'm
back to square one - as World Hill Academy is gone, the only one that remains
as a possibility is Meridian, but I don't know anything about them...

          Anyway, many thanks!

Fantastic thread. This group is really coming together, now.

I'm really pleased to see it developing as a place we can help each other like
            this.

The problem with Meridian is that on primary level it is a bilingual school
that is supposed to prepare Polish kids to study in English. As far as I know
many classes in primary school are taught in Polish, so if ou are looking for
an international school to avoid Polish, then Meridian is not the best option.
Of course my information might be a little bit outdated, so if you want to get
the most recent info, just contact them.

How about the Canadian school? It is kind of expensive, but all classes are
taught in English and it is a primary school + kindergarden, so you could send
both of your kids to the same place.

"Kind of expensive" being the operative word... smile I am actually quite happy
that some subjects (apparently it's the humanities) the children would learn in
Polish, as I really want them to speak Polish as well, and perhaps it might
prove the best way of going about it... As I really cannot afford the fees
charged by most of those international schools, I guess I'm trying to find
positive aspects in the situation that is not really ideal, but on the other
hand what better way of ensuring they learn Polish as well?

I guess I'll be going to pay Meridian an unexpected visit at some point this
              autumn... smile
