One of the pleasant aspects to Polish life, unless you're responsible for
actually trying to get things done, is the numerous holidays people have in
this country.
Graduates and those with several years work "staz" get 26 days holiday per
year under the labour code, on top of which they have numerous bank holidays
and national holidays of both a religious and non-religious character all
year round, including today, which is the non-biblical assumption of the
blessed virgin Mary, (whereas of course Good Friday isn't one, because that's
not Mary, that's just that son of her's, what's his name, dying on a cross
for something or other...).
When I first got here, in the first twelve months from April 1991 to April
1992, I counted about 14 national holidays, and this settled down to about 11
a year over the course of a few years.
Whatever you're doing, within reason, enjoy the holiday. The next one is the
beginning of November, which if memory serves is the day people drive around
the country in maluchs hoping it won't snow, with wreaths covering the back
seat, remebering not to forget visiting their dead relatives' graves, which
enables them to feel better about not remembering them all 364 other days of
the year.
