Having a nice bank holiday?

One of the pleasant aspects to Polish life, unless you're responsible for
actually trying to get things done, is the numerous holidays people have in
this country.

Graduates and those with several years work "staz" get 26 days holiday per
year under the labour code, on top of which they have numerous bank holidays
and national holidays of both a religious and non-religious character all
year round, including today, which is the non-biblical assumption of the
blessed virgin Mary, (whereas of course Good Friday isn't one, because that's
not Mary, that's just that son of her's, what's his name, dying on a cross
for something or other...).

When I first got here, in the first twelve months from April 1991 to April
1992, I counted about 14 national holidays, and this settled down to about 11
a year over the course of a few years.

Whatever you're doing, within reason, enjoy the holiday. The next one is the
beginning of November, which if memory serves is the day people drive around
the country in maluchs hoping it won't snow, with wreaths covering the back
seat, remebering not to forget visiting their dead relatives' graves, which
enables them to feel better about not remembering them all 364 other days of
the year.

yes, I agree-the holidays are a big plus. I have always missed all the free
time since being in the US, you get a 2 week vacation for most of your life,
and several holidays. On the other hand, since I spend Christmas in Poland, it
is often infuriating to try to accomplish something the week before Christmas-
everyone is getting ready for the the holiday-or maybe it is just my newly
      acquired American efficiency talking smile
I totally forgot about today being a holiday in Poland, and am foaming at the
mouth waiting for an email reply from Poland smile
Thanks for reminding me about this! And....Uncle Davey--I guess by now you know
that cross, or no cross-in Poland it is the motherhood that makes you a saint smile
gives you respect and a holiday named after you and your activitiessmile
