For the first seven years I lived in this country, quite apart from the
bottled water for drinking as water per se, I used this Oligocene water from
one of the many so-called "ujecia" around Warsaw. It comes form about 400 odd
metres below Warsaw, and what effect it will have on the skyscrapers when it
is all gone and nothing is holding the rocks above it up I know not.
The reason I stopped in the end is that I discovered how much easier it is to
filter the water from the tap with a Brita filter. Whether tap water in 1991
would have been safe to drink even after a Brita filter and boiling is
another matter, but it does seem as though the kranowka has improved quite a
lot.
Have any other foreigners experience the delights of taking underground water
from a pump here in Warsaw?
And if not, what do you do for tea and coffee? Pour bottled water into the
kettle, pour Brita filtered tap water into the kettle, or are you brave /
foolhardy enough to drink tapwater which has only been boiled?
If the latter, I would be interested in comparing the state of your guts to
mine in 1991, before I cottoned on that you shouldn't do that.
Best,
Uncle Davey
