Forum friends I need your help.

Today after work I will have an interview at a language school in order to
teach Portuguese language.

They need somebody in a part time to teach Portuguese for beginners, no
frills except for the fact that I have no idea about salary, can somebody
give me an idea in order to negociate a fare payment?

Thank you

I think you need to be looking at at least 80 PLN an hour, but start your
      negotiations at over 100PLN.

If it is a post with paid holiday, or other benefits, and a guaranteed volume
of work, so that you are on a real salary, not just hourly work, then you have
      to accept less.

If you had an employment contract for a 1/2 "staz", giving you rights under
labour law, then even as little as 4,000 PLN would be reasonable, or less
      outside the capital.

Muito Obrigado, Thank you a lot usenetposts

I will follow your suggestion, pitty that - if accepted - it will only be 5/6
hours maximum a week since Portuguese language doesn't have that demand and
classes have not too many students...

Humm... maybe I should have a course of Spanish language? smile

            Ola pedrunio!

Obrigado por o conselho. Moro e trabalho em Lodz desde 2004, em Portugal vivia
em Vila Nova de Famalicao, cerca de 25 km da cidade do Porto. Es polaco?
            Escreves muito bem em portugues.

            ******

Yes it's not so much money - goes around 45 pln/hour - but everything depends
on the C.V. of the teacher and the will of the employer, in my case I'm not a
teacher - I studied advertising - so I can't be payed like one, anyway the
experience is really great and I'm liking a lot.

I don't write Portuguese, but from esperanto I can kind of make out what you
just said, and I would like to respond to it.

With regards to what you should take from a language school, you have to bear
in mind that they will have a fixed cost of the hall, and of materials, and of
            their admin, etc etc.

I ran out some numbers in Excel, doing a kind of fictional "business plan" for
a language school, and I figured that if I have 6-7 students, I can easily
break even paying my tutor 4000 PLN/month for 20 hours a week. This is 50 PLN
per hour, but you get full social cover. Therefore you should be looking for
more than that if you are doing ad-hoc work.

If you are 30 PLN for 45 minutes, then you are effectively on 40 PLN per hour.
If you are not having to provide materials, or do much prepping beforehand, and
the number of students is few, then maybe your school is being fair to you. But
if you are doing work for classes outside class and the number of students
exceeds 7, then you are being taken advantage of, in my view.

That's just from the bird's eye view of what it actually takes to make a profit.

              Hello,

Sorry but my english is not very good.
I hink that all depend of the school and of the investment of this school.
As I know I never hear about this conditions regarding a teacher: 4000 pln for
              20 hours per week
I think is not so easy, the 'school market is very dificult now' because there
are a lot of schools. the more important invest a lot of money with
advertissment and it looks profitable because each year we are invade by their
advertisement. And each year there are a lot of comments about, of client no
              satisfied.
The little school try to live just with her 'local clients' and it is not easy
              too.
The advantage with the little school is that you are not a number. And I feel
              better.

I hope that you will understant what I wrote....I should return to school maybe
              to learn English....

              Have a nice day,

              Pedrunio

One of the offshoots or by-products, as it were, of a group like this is that
if we have a lot of language teachers you could actually form a language
                teachers co-operative.

It could be a company jointly owned by the teachers themselves, so that all the
profits go to the teachers and not the owners.

If there are ten people here who would like to get together in one place to
teach then I will meet you and give you advice on how to go about it.

                  Hello,

But you know, the problem is not to divised profits.
the problem is to have profits.
launching a school is a lot of work and problems.
My opinion is that it should be the less possible people wich decide because if
there is too much, nothing will be done.
                  It is my opinion.
                  Thank you for you proposition.

That's fine. Nobody is forcing anyone to be in a co-operative. Only I want to
point out two things that are true:

                    1. When people group together and make a business, if they are serious about
it, more times these businesses are successful than failures.

                    2. When a business does make a profit, the owners, and not the employees, egt
the benefits, and this with no end in sight. When a business fails, the
employee has pressure put on their price, and usually loses their job very
quickly, if they are not making a profit.

It's easy to be the basis for another man's profit, and not so easy to have the
guts to risk making a personal loss in order to be the man making the profit.

                      Hi Dave,

Might be interested, but is the number 10 a 'magical number' in a co-op here?

There's nothing magical about the number 10, other than the fact that 10 people
can afford a better facility than 6 people can.

OK, even if only 5 people want to do this, I will give them advice. I wouldn't
be surprised that if 5 people started off, that another 5 will quickly emerge
only too happy to be partners once the initial work and expense has been done
                        by the core group.

I think that a group of only 5 has a chance of success, whereas looking at what
else there is in the market, a group of 10 would have a pretty guaranteed
                        success.

Judging by the quality of the lessons on your blog, you could become quite a
                        hit with this.

Now I know some people that might want to be involved on the side of minority
                        languages like Lithuanian, Danish, etc.
