Bid To Scupper Booze Law

Plans to extend pub opening hours from next Thursday could be thrown into
disarray by a last-minute challenge.

The Conservatives are trying to reverse the order which brings the Licensing
Act into full effect.

Opposition MPs believe the bill will increase binge drinking and last night
the Lords voted to delay its implementation - although that is not binding.

The Tories move came as the Government launched its Christmas crackdown on
alcohol abuse.

It has announced a £2.5m fund to help police tackle drunken yobs.

Shadow culture secretary Theresa May told Sky News: "Until we sort out the
binge drinking culture, it would be nonsense to give people more time to
drink."

She wants to force all Labour MPs to go on the record and vote either for or
against the new licensing regime, which could see some pubs and clubs open
all day.

The House of Lords backed a seven-month delay to the changes but ministers
have made it clear they have no intention of accepting it.

Lord Strathclyde, the Tory leader in the Lords, said: "Quite clearly the
majority of the House of Lords saw a delay as a sensible approach to a policy
which is farcical and irresponsible."

The opening hours extension is due to take effect on Thursday, next week.

Ah, but in the country locals, they've stayed open till the small hours since
time began! Even the local bobbies come in for a tottie!

I've always thought that there is a great difference between the country (and
even to an extent the town) local and the binge-drinking pubs, which tend to be
      for the youngsters.

Anyway, its not the hours I'm after, but the atmosphere!

                Common as muck, they are!

If my son came home with one of these, I'd disinherit him on the spot.

The most disarming remark was "I speak like an Essex girl, even though I'm from
Dartford". I wonder if the chewing gum drops out of her mouth . . .
