Hemel Hempstead, Herts . . . Hurts

12.12.05, 02:05
I thought I'd mention that the place where the massive explosions happened
this morning happens to be my home town of Hemel Hempstead.

Thankfully the casualty figures for such as huge expolsion were low - we have
the town planning to thank for that - but clearly we will have a terrible
ecological situation now, and also no doubt the costs of insurance will
rocket again and the price of oil may well be effected.

We also need to look at the issue of guages of petrol in the atmosphere
around these depots. This was almost certainly down to a leak in a cistern.

I was in Hemel Hempstead once, and I spent the night in a tree sad

        But that's another story?

Or are you going to tell us all about it?

Nothing to tell, really. I think it was an oak.
We were travelling north from London, got as far as Hemel (or Hempstead, what
do the locals call it?) when night fell and being under the influence we
decided to sleep in a tree in a field near a roundabout.
We gathered some wood that was lying about the field to light a fire (it was
November and a bit cold), slept imperfectly and woke up to discover that the
field was full of of things for horses to jump over (don't know the exact
terminology), but that some of them had bits missing. Wooden bits.

In today's Herald, the explosion, which involved up to 60 million gallons of
fuel and was apparently heard in Holland and France, was described by a passing
          Glaswegian as "loud".
"It was the loudest explosion I've ever heard in my life - and I mean loud."

Like it. I've a few like that myself, but need to be at least a little under the
            influence to recount them nowadays.

I lived not too far away - we called it 'Hemel'.

Those things the horses used to jump over before someone burnt the best bits are
called fences. Bet they had an easy round the day after!

Is that a typical Glaswegian understantment? Nice.
