If Dave can't organise it, can we?

16.12.05, 14:50
The 1000th post get together.

I would suggest that it's too late to organise something for before the New
Year, so I would suggest something in January.

If anyone wants to come from outside of Warsaw, then they are quite welcome to
stay at mine for the night or two.

Can I suggest the 21st January (Saturday). If anyone really wants a cultural
time (i.e. Museum visit) ok, but what really counts is good company, a good
meal and a great booze-up.

Who's in? Suggestions for location(s)?

Impreza is always good thing, even if not made by Subaru. wink

If we are to make it Polish way, what about AleGloria?

I'm sure we can. But I'm up to my neck in it at the mo.
Sound like a good date but end of January I may be having my own knees upsmile

It was one of the hits at the beggining of rave culture.

The only lyrics were a sample of a bouncer saying:
"you're name's not down, you're not coming in, not tonight, you're not on the
              list" smile

Beats me, but many of my memories are triggered by songs.

Warsaw school holidays - I'm off skiing. February?

      - By the way, I go to Austria, stop in a comfy flat in a private house for EUR
75 a night, and have a good groomed piste right outside, though we're outside
the main resort and have to drive 5 mins to get there.
      • russh Re: If Dave can't organise it, can we? 16.12.05, 15:03
What resort? Spent many a week on the Austria pistes (and I shall not retort the
to normal pxxxxx on the piste).

I like Austria. But Slovakia seems cheaper - although the food isn't that

(TJ. 75 EUR for the appartment for 4, not per person)
        Acres of space, few people.
        • russh Re: If Dave can't organise it, can we? 16.12.05, 15:34
Thats great value - as cheap as Zacopane, and just a little better for skiing.
          • varsovian Re: If Dave can't organise it, can we? 16.12.05, 15:40
The downside is the drive - 13 hours or so (go at dead of night and the brake
lights tell you if PC Plod is out of the Katowicka highway. Otherwise 120km/h
            Once there, it's fantastic.
Obviously, new equipment, no queues, mostly polite skiers, altitude 2200m and
if I get bored there's Kitzbuehel 20 mins drive away.
            • russh Re: If Dave can't organise it, can we? 16.12.05, 15:52
              What resort?

I've been to Kitzbuehel (the great Hanankahn if I remember); had a great week 20
years ago, and can still see some of the bruises now. We used to go in a crowd
of 30 or so; mixed ages and sexes twice a year, and males-only once a year.

Kitzbuehel was the male only trip of that year - there were about 17 of us. Crazy.

Stupid thing is, when living in Italy I was only a few hours drive from the
Alps; Courmeyour etc. whilst near Milan, and the Dolomites and the Austrian Alps
whilst living in Venezia. I only got to ski for a few days a year!

Thanks to many "factors" including Waldek we are way over 2.000.

Dave, are we the fastest growing forum?

It seems that we won't really be able to find a date when everybody will be
avalaible, so I would suggest that we should meet when most of us can come.
Hopefully it won't be a one-time thing and then those who couldn't make it will
just catch up. What do you say?

Maybe simply we can choose some Friday or Sat evening?

If some of you are going tomorrow for the Human Rights Festival for "4 krotkie
history o Iraku" or "Kobiety z gory Ararat" write me until tomorrow morning and
maybe after the movie we can go and grab a coffee or a beer.

I really envy you for your skiing abilitessad Because of hiking I just started
having problems with my knees, but even before that I was a bit ashamed to
learn. It is not easy to see 5 year old kids going like bulletssmile while me.. sad

For central warsaw there's an Irish bar in the Warsaw Towers on Sienna - close
to the Intercontinental hotel that looks a prime target for Bin Laden.
Fridays after work would be brilliant - an excuse to come home drunk!
How did they get planning permission for that thing anyway?
          • russh Re: If Dave can't organise it, can we? 16.12.05, 15:54
Someone paid a lot of money probably.

An Irish bar sounds fine. Is the food good?
            • varsovian Re: If Dave can't organise it, can we? 16.12.05, 16:12
              Food?
Eeek, never eaten there - I've got a home to go to.
I just liked the atmosphere (and beer) the few times I've been, cos I bumped
              into people from my past.
Probably not the best place in town - it is an office block after all - but
it's nice and central; find the Holiday Inn, go through the passage-way and
it's in your face, so to speak.

This time I think it's going to be more than a quick pint on the way home from
work, and some food is required methinks.

Must be any number of good places to eat around the centre, then we can on to
                the pub.

There are lots of fantastic places in warsaw but I guess it is easier for us to

Student place - cheap - nice food; Vogue on Zlota (above Hybrydy).
Polish - Zgoda restaurant on Zgodasmile
                  Techno - Muza on Chmielna
Gay - Miedzy nami on Bracka
Quick Fix - Bordo on Chmielna
Intimate - Piano Bar near the Goethe Institut behind Chmielna
Italian - Roma on Mokotowska or Bacci Di Angelo. Expensive.
Spanich - Casa Valdemar on Chopina. Expensive but fantastic!
French - Absynt on Wspolna. VERY nice.
                  Indian - Tandoor on MDM
                  German - Adler on mokotowska.
American - TGI fridays or Champions.
Veggie - Cafe 6/12 on Zurawia (fantastic coctails).

My Personal Favourite: Republica Latina Nowy Swiat/pl.trzech krzyzy.

We have been the fastest growing private forum in the "Polska i Swiat" section,
for the last week or so, but I have no way of telling whether we are the
fastest growing on all sections. Until relatively recently the Japanese forum
was growing faster than ours, and it is the largest forum in this section, over
four times the size of this. I'm not counting the spam forum, as this obviously
has meaningless posts in it, which thankfully has not happened here.

I think we are not far off getting into the top one hundred private forums of
the four thousand or so that there are.

When I get time, I'll run through some stats. Unless someone else feels like
researching where we are globally on here.

        all slush all over Warsaw.

Russ is now the man who is the official organiser of the meet-ups. I am more

Will all be finalised next week - and that's a promise.

We'll go for Jan or early Feb. Personally don't see a problem with mid-Jan, but
I'll get on to it Monday.

Having seen a few replies, I would suggest:

      13th or 14th January
      Centrum Warsaw.

If Friday is chosen, then I would suggest after work (say 17.30 to 18.00). If
Saturday, then it should be a little later, say 19.30 to 20.00.

Meeting place - an agreed bar. Then if food is available, dinner at the bar; if
not, on to some nearby restaurant.

Please let me know. As said before, if anyone wants to come from outside Warsaw,
then I have no problem with putting them up, to save hotel costs.

Here's hoping that at least the 1st get-together takes place - come on guys & gals

For me it doesn't really matter if it's 13 or 14.

I rather know coffee places than pubs so somebody else should propose a place.

Friday the Thirteenth sounds a suitably auspicious day - I'm on, especially as
I won't have to make a special trip into Warsaw (work in Warsaw, live and
          breathe in Komorow).
Truly, anywhere's good, so I'll go along with whatever you say. One comment I
would make is it would be better for non-native speakers of English if the
place were a touch quieter. Personally, I can speak Polish on an intercity
train, but not on my noisy WKD commuter pile of złom.
          • russh Re: When & Where 19.12.05, 16:15
Good point Varsovian (re the quieter place for non-native speakers).

I have no ideas re places, so would leave tht decision to the experts, who I

This could end up being incredibly funny - can you imagine 15 people in one

My personal recommendation is Someplace Else at the Sheraton on ul. Prus'a. It
has the right atmosphere, and is very central for buses and trams, etc.

I was there today, and it has British fish and chips, Irish bangers and mash,
something from almost every cuisine and not that dear for what it is.

The music is good but not too loud. It is comfortable. It is the sort of place
you can really hang out for a while and chat.

OK, then we are on for Friday 13th at 19:00 at Someplace Else which is the
International style bar at Hotel Sheraton on Ulica Prusa, Warsaw.

I am going to book the table - I will book a table for 8 provisionally, but
knowing that place I don't think it will be a problem if we go over or under by
                  about 50% either way.

Clearly it would be helpful if you could give an indication of whether you'll
definitely be there, definitely won't be there, or might be there, so that I
                  can amend that if needed.

I'll put 30 PLN down as my treat for every person who comes, (to a minimum of
200, a max of 400 PLN) and the remainder of the bill will be shared equally,
unless there is a big variation between what people are having (eg. some people
might only want to drink and other might go for a three course meal too) in
which case we can decide to have each person pay their own minus the 30 PLN per
                  head which is my treat.

If anyone else who is working wants to co-sponsor with me in order to encourage
the students or lower earners, and get a better turn out then that's cool too.

Please come and meet the people you've been talking to!

I couldn't get a firm reservation, as apparently they don't do reservations on
Friday evenings, but she said she would "do her best" for us.

It's good if we can get there fairly sharpish for 19:00. So far I don't have
one single person who has confirmed that they are definitely gonna be there, so
hopefully I don't just sit there looking like a lemon.

              Uh?
There's only one new train, and I haven't seen it working recently.

It's Boleslawa Prusa - which is just off plac trzech krzyzy as you go towards
        the Sejm.

        You cannot miss it.

The bar is on the ground floor on the Plac +++ end of the hotel.

Look forward to meeting you finally.
