Hi,
My name is Agnes, Im Polish, my husband is American. We are planning to move
to Poland. It will not be a problem for me, but I dont know how is my husband
going to adapt. Are the any jobs for somebody who doesnt speak Polish at all?
What was your experience when you moved to Poland? What should we know?

      Hello Agnes,

there are jobs for non-Polsih speakers too. I'm learning Polish now, but found a
job. Obviously, a lot depends on his qualifications and experience.
It also depends in which region you want to live. I would say that around
Wroclaw there are quite many opportunities (Siemens, HP), the same goes for
Warszawa and for Poznan too, I guess.

You should check the procedure for him to get a staying permit. Since he is the
husband of a Polish citizen, he won't need a separate working permit. If you
will need some help with solving things with the staying permit, I can put you
in touch with some organisations which assist foreigners.

I can only say positive things regarding moving to Poland, even though in the
begining when I didn't have job it wasn't easy on me. If this is the first
foreign country where your husband will live, probably in the begining it won't
      be easy.

The sorts of jobs you can do in Poland without knowing any Polish are basically
any international e-business that you can do off a website.

If his web skills are good, then he could do a whole bunch of things and it
doesn't matter if he is in Poland, in America, or in Uttar Pradesh.

If he is a driver, then he could ferry the food we want between the UK and
Poland. There is an opening for someone to start this business that we are all
talking about and nobody is doing.

He'd be away from home a lot with that one though.

What does he do right now, that'd be a start?

          he's a construction engineer
          • varsovian Re: Job in Poland for an American 20.12.05, 11:16
Tough one, Poland is full of good engineers (with drink problems if you don't
            keep an eye on them).
One line of business would be foreman and materials purchaser for private house
build projects. This would obviously require learning the Polish terms for all
the building materials, which actually is not all that difficult once you get
going. To tell you the truth, I only know them in Polish!
The key to the job is being the owner's eyes on the building site, making sure
they work properly and making sure all materials are bought - if you leave it
to a building company to buy the materials, they charge you full price for
materials and happily pocket the 10-15% discount they get at the skład
budowlany. And if you are unlucky, they might substitute poor quality materials
for the ones you bought ...
Alternatively, if you have capital or can get capital, buy a plot of land,
build, live in it, sell, make a profit and do it again. Once you get going, it
would be self-financing. The Warsaw area is going through a property boom
            which is set to continue.

we are thinking about becoming developers, we have some capital, but dont know
if its going to be profitable and how does the market for new aparments looks
              like in Poland. Answer anyone?

I would buy land and build a house.
New flats cost a fortune and I don't think you'll get a big return.
Do you want a little run-down on housebuilding costs?
                • agakoza1 Re: Job in Poland for an American 20.12.05, 13:05
i was thinking about building a small apartment complex and sell separate flats
for profit. we already have a house in Poland.

I have a property development company. It is like everything else - if you do a
good job, a fortune awaits. The market is sound currently, and the forcasts
good, especially for appartments (they costs less), but there are some VAT
rumours around that could change the prospects.

You also need a good 'financial' person (accountant).

In any case, you need to research well.

yes I heard about VAT, what exactly is going to change with it? do you have any
                  idea?
                  • varsovian Re: Job in Poland for an American 20.12.05, 13:31
Isn't it 22% VAT on new flats in 2007?
                    • russh Re: Job in Poland for an American 20.12.05, 14:22
I believe it is to extend to all housing, but I have been told that nothing is
                      yet concrete.

I've sacked my accountant as he's an absolute berk!

Obviously the potential impact on demand with an extra 15% tax on the product is
substantial, so I cannot believe it will happen (he says with his fingers
crossed), let alone the impact on an already low housing:population ration.
