Did you get anything nice?

26.12.05, 15:06
..for Christmas?

I got an exercise bike, as I mentioned in another thread, and I also got the
illustrated version of Bill Bryson's "A short History of Nearly Everything".
This is a truly impressive book which will grace my bathroom for many years.
It is available from the front windows of most of the American Bookstore
chain in Warsaw at the moment, and the price tag of 169 PLN is, as usual,
cheaper than the 30 English quid tag on the inside cover.

That's something worth remembering, by the way, that if you buy British books
in Poland, they are not covered by the "net book agreement" and, since the
American bookstore chain also features all the most popular UK titles, you
can make a significant saving buying there, if you have people coming over
who normally buy their books in the UK (I believe there are still one or two
real bookshops left over there, in amongst the WH Smithses and wot not) then
you can always drop them the hint to try here first, as they could save about
20%.

That was an aside, which as ever will no doubt totally hi-jack this thread
into a discussion of books and bookshops, but to at least close on topic,
what did you get for Christmas?

Other than the lovely smiles on your kids and grandkids faces, that goes
without saying, even though, of course, it's the best present of the lot...

      Hello everyone!

I am glad I am not the only one that has to exercise smile I didn't get a
stationery bike or even a treadmill but one of my resolutions is to start
walking again. The area around my house is very hilly so it takes only 15
minutes to get a good work out!
I got a pair of nice scissors for my sewing (from my son) and it's already
labelled "MOM's". See,I always had beef with everyone for using MY scissors
(and it wasn't for protection) to cut open things, to snip metal or electrical
wires...anything you can think of! They had so many nicks in them, they
      wouldn't even close properly. Grrrr...
Now, I got a nice new pair and I am HIDING IT!!! Yeah! I am not even gonna tell
YOU where I keep them. Can't be too careful!
I got a little beauty basket with soaps and body rubs, shampoo and crap like
that. I usually end up giving it to my daughter. She is a lot more into that
than I am. I got a DVD movie "March of the Penguins". I love animal movies and
that one was on my wish list. It has great reviews and I am sure I will enjoy
      it.
That's about it. Other than that I got a couple of gift certificates that will
be used when we move out. These ones are for "Home sense" and "Winners",places
that sell things to outfit your home ( like curtains, linens, inside decor, etc)

My other son got me a gift certificate for Chapters so I will get me a nice
book from them down the road.

Aside from cash, plastic gift cards are in this season big time. It makes
Christmas shopping so much easier when you come to think of it. It also keeps
      the returns to a minimum.

Hope to hear from everyone else! How was your holiday?

The bike sounds like a cool idea! Won't that make you feel like a
      hamster...running around in circles?
It really is a nice gift! smile I am happy for you!
Our stores in Canada seem to be completely stripped. Canadians made a
collective stampede to the stores on the 23rd of December and wracked up a
whopping 2.3 billion dollars in shopping on that ONE day alone! I heard they
broke the record. That was the day before Xmas. Boxing day shopping, however,
has become a full contact sport so if you value your life, take my advice and
      stay home!
Whatever happened to the Christmas spirit? I mean it! uncertain

        Hi Kylie,

I don't fee like I'm in a treadmill, it's like being in my living room watching
TV but doing what I used to do in a gym.

Definitely less boring than in the gym. My bike is alsoa bit better than the
        one they had.
        • kylie1 Re: Did you get anything nice? 29.12.05, 21:40
In that case you must feel like an oversized hamster on a wheel going round and
round and round. Except you are a more fancy hamster with TV or music going on.
I hope your bike has a comfy seat, not one of them "butt floss" pads that cut
deep into your private parts. That can make for a painful long trip...and very
          little sexual activity afterwards.
As they say, where there is a will there is a way!

I'd just like to echo the last post (no military pun intended)
Cycling extensively is bad for your family jewels ...
"Where there's a willy, it's in the way."

I would like to reassure everyone that I do have a comfy seat.

I also have a total of 5 kids, so, even if I did do myself a mischief, it would
              be not before time.

Dave...five kids! Man, you are a baby machine gun!
The bike couldn't come a minute too soon!
              Please, do enjoy it!

I got a shirt and a couple of Simpsons dvds.
No socks, though. Does this mean I'm old enough to start buying my own? I've
heard they make them in different sizes, so I'll just wait til my birthday.
And, for the first time in 20 years, I didn't get a Billy Connolly record,
tape, cd or dvd, or the Oor Wullie annual. Have I been away so long that I've
finally been excluded from mainstream Scottish society? Or has Connolly died?

And they forgot about your favorite Benny Hill DVD?!

Unfortunately they couldn't find a copy with a crap translation read out by
someone sounding like he's got a hangover, with breaks for adverts appearing
          mid-sentence like on Polsat sad

            Connoly is fantasticsmile

DO you like him, or is it that you just always get something of his for Xmas?

Which came first, the chicken or the egg?
Most Scottish men get given Billy Connolly things as presents, most Scots like
him. Do Scottish women think "He likes the Big Yin, I'll buy him a DVD and some
socks", or has our appreciation simply been developed by decades of
brainwashing in the form of presents from mothers, girlfriends, etc?
I personally think he's great, but he's also a national institution, and
whenever he does something it's in all the papers.
But it's always either "The Big Yin, Scotland's favourite comic, is on form
once again, and has done something really funny", or else, "Billy Connolly, who
now lives in America, has made a crap film."

                Which film is that, then?

Don't know. I think they banned it, burnt all the negatives and blamed the
                  English.
