KATOWICE a place to live in

How many foreigners live in Katowice?
Why are you here?
What are you doing here?
Do you plan to stay longer?

I've been here for nearly 12 years, working as a translator, teacher (and other
things). I live in the South Side, which I think is the best part.
I'm probably leaving in the summer.

I think the same. I live also in the South Side.
Where exactly do you live? Do you work for a language school?
        • nasza_maggie Re: KATOWICE a place to live in 13.02.06, 14:19
I like Katowice, although it has somewhat of a sad image/factory feeling. It is
so great film and photo wise. And the people there make me laugh! I love the
          dialect.

Yes, there are many places where you become that feeling.

            > And the people there make me laugh! I love the dialect.

Do you have your favourite words from Silesian dialect? There is one which is
said to stem from English word "broomstick" meaning the same in Silesian
dialect, but spelled: "brumśtyk". If it's true, I don't know. I just read some
explanations in Harry Potter book. wink

            BTW: Do you live here?
            • nasza_maggie Re: KATOWICE a place to live in 13.02.06, 14:32
              nope I don't smile

Most of the dialect there is from Germany so it is funny to hear them talk in
it, because it sounds like Polish but it isn't really. There is a sitcom on TVP
from Silesia, but I don't remember what it is called. One of the guys is
              called 'Bercik' smile

I was recently told of a word, that sounds like hazel - but I will refrain from
              explaining furthersmile

There was an advert on this forum about Śląsk - silesia.com ?

I'm almost sure, it doesn't have anything to do with hazel eyes wink But with
                an "eye"? Hmmm...

                To be continued.....

          In Piotrowice.
At the moment I'm working for a language school, among other things.

Which of the language schools do you work for, if it's not a secret?
Why are you going to leave? Do you need change or are bored with
            Poland/Katowice?

I've been here so long that if I don't go back soon, I'll never be able to
adapt. I'll be 36 this year and I've spent a third of my life in K-ce, I don't
regret it. It'll be difficult to leave, really difficult, but for various
personal reasons now is the time.
And after the recent election results, this country is completely and utterly
              fucked anyway.

Why so? Especially after 12 years? But then again maybe it's for similar reasons
as my family's - we've been living here together also for nearly 12 years, but
when I'm done with my studies we also plan on moving on.

      Good morning Katowice smile

      Bercik and Święta Wojna
Re what Nasza_Maggie wrote: the sitcom with Becik is thought to represent
Silesia and people living here. It's true, but only to some extent. People here
think, the sitcom is only spreading prejudices about Silesia - it hurts.
Silesia isn't so poor as many people still think. People here aren't primitive.
      They are ...

      Yes, how they are???
      • nasza_maggie Re: KATOWICE a place to live in 14.02.06, 12:02
As for the series it is crap, but there you go. It is as much silesian as allo
        allo is french smile

I know the people there aren't primitive. But you see, any language that has
dialects - the dialects in someway implements that the people who speak it seem
to be of lower class than those who don't...

Anyway - the elections are making you leave Ian? Nice excuse....

Katowice is a big city, but can you imagine living in a Polish small town or in
      the countryside?
Maybe someone of you lives in such place. What are your impressions?

        I've visited the Polish countryside.
        Lots of dogs and chickens.

Yes, yes I know. I grew up in the countryside. I won't forget this time. It was
beautiful. But, according to the subject "Katowice", I don't regret leaving
home for where I live now.
