"Generation JP2 doesn't exist"

This fact has always been obvious, but the journalists who sold papers less
than a year ago with the headlines "It's Generation JP2!" are now selling
them with the headline "It's not generation JP2!"

"I'm Generation JP2", says 27-year old Andrzej from Warsaw, proudly...
When the last pope was dying, he, like thousands of other young Poles went on
night-time vigils and lit a candle when Wojtyła died.
Of course Andrzej, who claims to be a Catholic, is no different from most
other young Poles - he lives in sin with his girlfriend, and they use
contraception.

Most young Poles believe there is no clear divide between what's good and
what's evil, after all, life is complicated. Most believe lying is sometimes
justified.

Interestingly, the article doesn't say what percentage of Poles think
hypocrisy is wrong...

Catolic religion is riddled with guilt by its very nature. The church
continues to show no concern to investigate its abusers (priests) - a case
after case, after case. The Catholic church is in need of huge reform. I think
the younger people in Poland will SOON find out for themselves what matters and
what needs changing. From what I know only about a quarter of young Poles
worship regularly. I wouldn't expect those changes overnight but I have a
feeling it's coming real soon. Already attendances at mass are falling,
contraceptives are being widely used, people are starting to ask questions. The
Catholic church before the end of communism was a huge part of Poland's
national identity. The church was against the former communist regime and people
listened. They were poor and they were scared. Nowadays the church's position
is being redefined and scrutinized. I would really wonder if the RC church can
survive democracy in Poland. Polish Catholicism will soon look like any other
western religion. You can't keep people in the dark the whole time. The church
needs to come out clean and become accountable. that's really important.

I have a few Dave Letterman jokes that I really like:

""The Catholic Church is finally cracking down. Here's the deal now: if a
priest is transferred to another parish, he cannot take his live-in boyfriend."

"I read this in the paper this morning: New York City has a priest shortage. So
you see, there is some good news in the world. ... To give you an idea how bad
it is, earlier today in Brooklyn an alter boy had to grope himself."

The same cruel and cynical hypocrisy happens right in the middle of Rome with
the Pope in the center. Just around the corner 100 feet away from the Vatican
they are is selling condoms in their little kiosks. What is it telling you?

That the majority of people in Italy do not believe in the preachings of the
            Catholic Church.

            That it is outdated.

That Poland will become more successful only when the Catholic Church is
marginalised, or at least has nothing to do with politics.

              > That it is outdated.

Perhaps it's outdated russh but Polands church situation will be yesterdays
              news pretty soon too.

Some 96 percent of the 38 mill. Poles are Catholic...now, nearly half regularly
attend Mass and I wouldn't be surprised that half of those don't even want to
              be there.

              > That Poland will become more successful only when the Catholic Church is
              > marginalised, or at least has nothing to do with politics

Of course, that's a no brainer. It's like going from one dictatorship to
another. Many Poles already think church participation in political life is too
strong. Like I said before, the church's ability to adapt to democracy won't
happen overnight but it will happen. Give it time. What worked in communist
Poland won't rank high in today's Poland, much less later on. The church will
have to come to grips with the changes because they won't have any other
choice. Good news is the decline in popularity has already begun. I have no
              doubt it will continue.

                Agreed.

Poland will be able to call itself a modern society when it has happened.
