Private Eye round up

22.03.06, 10:08
Happening in the UK this week:

Labour party donor, Dr Chai Patel made a fortune from a nursing home, Lynde
House, where standards of care were very low. A disciplinary hearing (serious
professional misconduct) at the General Medical Council collapsed after
Patel's lawyers had independent reports deemed "hearsay" and therefore
inadmissible.

David Mills (aka Mr Tessa Jowell) is trying to throw Italian prosecuters off
his back by explaining in detail how he tricked the UK Inland Revenue ...

Mark Bolland - remember him? He's the former PR bloke of Prince Charles who
photocopied his diaries and published them "in the public interest", well
he's not fighting his own negative press coverage. His civil partner, Guy
Black (a manager at the Telegraph) definitely had no part to play in sacking
a journalist, Sarah Sands, who had just written an article in which she
called Bolland "a double-dealing manipulative schemer".

The EU's Energy Policy Green Paper 2006 claims that a common energy policy
will reduce petty national self-interest ... err, just like the Common
Agricultural Policy.

The Ministry of Defence spent GBP 100m on building an aircraft superhangar -
just before closing the base where it was located.

The NHS is incurring GBP 300m in redundancy payments for abandoning Primary
care Trusts ... which were only set up in 2002.

Sussex University is making savings to plug a GBP 4m hole in its finances by
sacking science staff. Meanwhile it still decided to spend money on a week-
long Vagina Festival, including a "vagina painting workshop" and a "female
ejaculation workshop". High principals indeed.

Getting Private Eye is a must if you really want to know what is going on in
the UK. High class journalism, low class presentation, silly humour.

You do tempt me to buy a subscription, but what does it cost and what sort of
delay is there in its arrival?

I used to get it many years ago. It has always been very interesting.

Like Dave, I'd like to know how you get it.

Easy - subscribe through their website
Costs about GBP 20 a year (26 copies)
The last copy I got was dated March 17 - I received it on March 21
