ms.jones Re: Where has everyone gone? 05.04.06, 00:45 I'm taking photographs, finding out about cameras and lenses, starting a photoblog, learning Greek and looking after my mum. Dave, I'll use your language method when I'm ready for vocabulary lists of 25. The idea of distilling sounds good! I'm at a stage of learning to read and write basic phrases using the Greek alphabet - unit 2 of 'teach yourself' book. I'll start a list after I've gone through a few units. All my words and phrases are on little cards so far; one side with the phrase in Greek and English, the other side with phonetic transcription. Odpowiedz Link
usenetposts Re: Where has everyone gone? 05.04.06, 10:18 OK, so, which kind of Greek are you learning? Modern, Ancient or Koine? I am learning Ancient Greek myself, on and off, and the method does well for that language. I'll be learning Chinese soon (I've ordered the course) but the method may need adapting for Chinese as there is a whole lot of other stuff you have to do with Chinese, like remember the stroke orders in the characters, identify the radicals, remember which of five tonal variants the word has, as well as the word itself and its meaning. I'm getting sick of being sick of China and its success. There is a saying, if you can't beat them, join them, and if I were to master Chinese I would probably be the only Chinese speaking auditor in this country, and that could have quite positive market implications. The introduction of my book tells me that I am learning "the standard spoken language used today in Greece. It is called 'demotic' meaning 'popular' or 'everyday' language, as opposed to 'katharevousa', a form of Modern Greek, which is almost extinct." Does it mean I'm not learning modern Greek? This is very confusing. So I may not know what language I'm learning to speak but I can say in it: Thistihos, tora ksero mono anglika. > you can't beat them, join them, and if I were to master Chinese I would > probably be the only Chinese speaking auditor in this country, and that could > have quite positive market implications. Sounds like a very smart move. They should start teaching it in schools Odpowiedz Link

I just had a look at the Kanada forum, because I thought I'd learn interesting stuff about polar bears and huge enormous trees. Minimax is indeed there. For obvious reasons he doesn't start any threads or enlighten folk with his knowledge or opinions, and just confines himself to the occasional bitchy comment about other people: forum.gazeta.pl/forum/72,2.html?f=23005&w=38981013&a=39006959 It's interesting that he thinks Polish emigrants are lazy because they expect to be presented with a big bag of jobs as soon as they get off the plane, but his only major contribution to this forum has been several long and boring posts about how he got angry when nobody in a British bank spoke Polish Odpowiedz Link
