Spring Time Photos from my Village and Contest

27.04.06, 17:21
I was outside today for most of this beautiful warm Spring day, cutting
weeds, thorn bushes, and pruning my apple trees. Every season, I get these
nice yellow flowers growing on my property. Does anyone here know what they
are called in English and Polish? Whoever can correctly identify them (in
both languages) will win the prize which appears in one of the photos below.
I'll need your help because I have no idea what they are called! Click on the
links below, then click on the photos to make them appear in their original
size.

Looks very nice Eugene. Pics and the area.
My wife thinks it could be pierwiosnki. No idea what it is in English. Rough
      translation would be firstspringers. LOL
If, in a remote chance, that this is a correct answers, I hope the prize is not
      one of the logs wink

I thought the shape of the flowers and stalks look more like one of the
Campions, celebrated by Freddy Mercury when he sang "We are the campions, my
friend". But unfortunately they didn't have the flycatching throat or leaf
shape of the true Campion. Dey just didn't go de dishtanshe to be a true Camp.

So I thought in another direction, being gided more by the leaf than the
        flower, and I got there:

        en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Primula_veris
Eugene, congratulations. Not only the cow slips about on your property, but you
        have the keys to heaven.

That is actually the right answer, as Primula veris shows up in Polish as
Pierwosnek lekarski. In English we say "cowslip", so bear that in mind when i
say that your wife deserves a "pat on the back".

The bad news is that Eugene could technically get arrested if he pulls up or
cuts any of these plants, as they are under strict protection in Poland.

Just in case you are interested; in Hungarian they are called "kankalin".

Wow, that's a strict protection. In the region where I grew up, at times people
were getting arrested for collecting Leontopodium Alpinum.

Were they, like, druids, or what? Did they want to make an ancient Gallic
remedy or did they need help to forge the Romanian 50 lei banknote it features
            on?

Or did they just like The Sound of Music?

You are all amazing, with an eye for detail. Minimus, your wife knows her
flowers. Dave, how did you ever manage to track down precise photos and
synopsis so quickly? Ok, you all win the grand prize of one can (or bottle) of
              Tyskie Polski brew per person!

An elderly woman, and another farmer down the hill from me, both neighbors of
mine, confirmed what Dave had mentioned about the "Cowslip / Pierwosnek
Lekarski" being a protected species. She said to me, "Ten kwiaty jest ochrony",
and the the farmer quoted the exact name that Minimus and his wife mentioned.
It has some interesting medical values that I never knew about. Might be good
for a hangover after we drink those beers. So again, congratulations!

              Cheers,

              Eugene
