I didn't understand that bit about Andrzej Lepper

08.05.06, 20:52
...in today's news.

If I understood right, he has been sentenced to a year in prison, but his
sentence is suspended until he has finished being Vice Premier in charge of
beetroots. How will he manage to focus properly on beetroot related questions
if he has this like prison sentence hanging over his head?

And wasn't it just for being a bit outspoken about other politicians, calling
them crooks and what have you, which seems to me like a statement of the
blindingly obvious?

It's a bit harshch on the barszcz, if you ask me.

his sentense is suspanded until he commits the same crime (or similar) again.
It has nothing to do (at least theoretically) with him being a deputy pm.

        OK, thanks for that.

I still don't quite understand how an unelected judge gets to tell an elected
member of parliament what he can and cannot say.

I just don't understand how that is supposed to be democratic.

Wasn't his immunity withdrawn in a parliamentary vote?
In any case Polish politics is just a big bagno.

In fact her has 2 sentences. both with suspension one for 4 years and one for
            5.

Both are for seperate incidents. One in 1999 and one in 2001. One is about Andy
talking too much rubbish in the sejm and the other one is for blocking the
            Swiecko border crossing.

And there is most likely more where that came from, like wasting the wheat that
was imported from somewhere, by opening the containers transported on trains
and letting the wheat fall out. etc.

It is not a case of a judge telling him what he can say but reminding him not
to talk bollocks, especially in the sejm if he hasn't got legitimate proof.
