A story you wil never hear about in this mess is the incompetence of not only
Con Ed and the city agencies, but of the Media. In a city that is the HQ of
the three networks, that boasts five dailies, two all news radio stations,
and three very competitive local TV stations, above and beyond the network
affiliates, it took four days to discover that there were over 25,000
customers without power, not 1900. Not one of these newstypes thought to take
a drive around NW Queens to see what areas were without power. No one thought
to use a traffic copter to get a picture of where the blackouts were.
It took the same time to actually discover what Con Ed means by "customer".
Essentially it means the building where the wires enter from the main system.
This can be a one family home or an apartment complex of hundreds of units.
To Con Ed it's still a single customer.
None of this involved sending correspondents to Iraq, Lebanon, or even New
Orleans. This mess ocurred in the backyard of the greatest concentration of
media in the world, and they could'nt find out what was going on, how it
happened or even how many were affected. This is the story that no one will
hear.
