Anfield new boy Bruno Cheyrou provided a welcome silver lining as Liverpool
slipped to a disappointing friendly defeat against Lazio.
The Ł4million midfielder was the star of the show as Gerard Houllier's summer
signings shone before eventually going down by a single goal to the cash-
strapped Italians.
Cheyrou and El-Hadji Diouf both looked the part but could do nothing as the
Premiership hopefuls were sunk by a blunder from keeper Jerzy Dudek a minute
before half-time.
There appeared little danger as Rodriguez Cesar led a rare Lazio raid down
the flank, but the Poland international somehow allowed his cross-shot to
creep inside a post for what proved to be the winner.
Until then, the Reds had dominated, with Cheyrou stining Luca Marchegiani's
palms with a couple of long-range efforts and Diouf's pace worrying Jaap Stam
on his return to England.
Houllier responded to going behind by making five half-time subs, and Michael
Owen was soon hauled off to be replaced by Milan Baros.
And the youngster almost made an immediate impact when he appeared to be
tripped by Fernando Couto in the box, but as the majority of the 44,677 crowd
appealed for a penalty, the referee waved play on and Lazio breathed a
collective sigh of relief.
