My grandfather came from Bialystock, and I have a large family in Poland--all
long dead, unfortunately, slaughtered by some combination of Germans and Poles
in World War II.
Despite this, I consider myself one-quarter Polish, and I'll tell you which
quarter that is--the part of me that is strong, stolid, dependable, loving. The
quarter that can sit down in front of a pickle--a good pickle, with maybe a
little herring and some black bread
