Former minister and the 11th IDF chief of staff Rafael Eitan (Raful), 75,
died this (Tuesday) morning after drowning off the coast of Ahsdod.
A search and rescue operation was launched this morning after the ex-leader
of “Tzomet” was reported missing. Divers found his body and MDA teams
performed a lengthy resuscitation effort, but to no avail.
Eitan was the head of the “Jubilee Harbor” project in the northern part of
the Ashdod Port. He toured the breakwater, which is currently being built in
front of the harbor, in order to assess possible damages from Monday’s storm.
Before his body was located, Ashdod Port spokesman Yigal Ben-Zikri told NRG
Maariv, “Around 7:15 am we were notified by the Ashtrum Company, which is
building the breakwater, that at about 6:15 Raful entered the breakwater
through the Naval base and they have since lost contact with him. His car was
found empty on the breakwater and an emergency procedure was initiated at the
port”.
Transportation Minister Meir Sheetrit ordered the formation of a committee to
investigate the circumstances of Eitan's death.
Former President Ezer Weitzman said this morning after news of Eitan’s
death, “It is a heavy loss to the IDF, IDF tradition and everyone who knew
him. He was brave, a leader, and the best of the best. He was one of the most
interesting figures in Israeli history”.
Labor Chairman Shimon Peres: “Raful was one of the greatest and courageous
military leaders of the Jewish people and the State of Israel. Many owe him
their lives for his bravery”.
