Car bomb blast kills 4 in Lebanon

BEIRUT, Lebanon
Anti-Syrian journalist and lawmaker Gibran Tueni was killed Monday in an
explosion that targeted his convoy, according to two Lebanese TV stations that
are allied with him. Police did not immediately confirm.
LBC and Future TV said Tueni was killed in the bombing that killed two other
people in an industrial suburb of Beirut.
According to a CNN report, the explosion targeted Tueni. Tueni had just passed
area before explosion occured, Lebanese and Arab television stations quoted
Lebanese security officials.
Media reports gave conflicting casualty reports, ranging from 10 wounded to
four killed, but police gave no immediate word on casualties.
The cause of the explosion, which occurred on a side road in the Mkalles area,
a Christian eastern suburb, was not immediately known.
LBC, a leading Christian TV station, reported there were more than 10 people
wounded, two of them in serious condition. Other TV stations said at least two
people were killed.
LBC and Future TV station, which is owned by the Hariri family, said a car
bomb had been detonated, but police did not immediately confirm that.
The explosion shattered windows, wrecked cars and caused a fire in factories
and the nearby bush.
The explosion occurred on a side road in an industrial area, the reports said.
The main Mkalles road leads from the Lebanese capital to the mountains. A few
kilometers (miles) up that road is Monteverde, the site of the headquarters of
the UN investigation into the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.
Lebanon has been rocked by a series of mysterious explosion targeting
anti-Syrians in recent months. Media reports have linked the bombings to the
investigation into Hariri's assassination as an attempt to derail the probe.
The explosion Monday came hours after chief U.N. investigator Detlev Mehlis
submitted his report to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan on the investigation.
In an earlier report in October, Mehlis implicated Syrian and allied Lebanese
opfficials in the February truck bombing that killed Hariri and 20 others in
Beirut.
