No word on the whereabouts of the three Britons kidnapped in Rafah Wednesday
and no claim of responsibility from any group

December 28, 2005, 10:47 PM (GMT+02:00)

The leader of the Fatah-Black Leopards, Nidal an’Najar, issued a statement
disassociating the group from any part in the seizure at gunpoint of Kate
Burton, 25, a human rights worker at the Gaza-based al-Mizan organization, and
her parents. This is the longest hostage-taking episode known in Gaza and
therefore cause for concern. In former cases, Palestinian Authority
intercession obtained captives’ release unharmed after a few hours. British
MI6 agents posted in the Gaza Strip are trying to contact the abductors, while
the Palestinian Authority is searching for the missing trio - so far without
finding any trace.

The British secret service operates three operations centers in Rafah, Gaza
City and the Erez crossing into Israel, mainly to supervise Palestinian
security forces’ purported crackdown on terror in the Gaza Strip. The
possibility is not ruled that the group which snatched the Britons may have
passed them on to another group, even one of the two al Qaeda cells
established recently in the Gaza Strip.

Earlier, DEBKAfile’s Exclusive counter-terror sources reported that the
Britons were seized as human shields to thwart Israel’s north Gazan no-go
zone, which went into effect on the day of the kidnapping.

The foreign office in London has confirmed the abductions and repeats its
warning to Britons to refrain from entering the Gaza Strip for any reason.

Suicide bomber was planning attack at kids' Hanukkah party
      By Amos Harel

The suicide bomber who killed an Israel Defense Forces officer and two
Palestinians at an army checkpoint near Tul Karm yesterday was apparently
planning to blow himself up at one of the many children's events taking place in
Tel Aviv during this week's Hanukkah holiday, army sources said.

Had the bomber not been stopped at the checkpoint, the attack would have been
far more deadly, said the sources.

Three soldiers and seven Palestinians were wounded in the bombing. Of the
soldiers, one was seriously wounded, while the others suffered only light injuries.

The slain officer was Lieutenant Ori Binamo, 21, of Nesher. Of the slain
Palestinians, one was the taxi driver who was carrying the bomber, and army
sources said that the other might have been the bomber's guide.

DEBKAfile reports: The three British hostages seized in Gaza were freed Friday
night for ransom of an unknown sum

      December 28, 2005, 10:47 PM (GMT+02:00)

All day, the foreign office in London insisted there was no contact with the
Palestinian kidnappers of Kate Burton, 25, a human rights worker at the
Gaza-based al-Mizan organization, and her parents, who were snatched at gunpoint
in Rafah Wednesday and their kidnappers were unknown. It was announced that an
envoy of the British Muslim Council would travel to the Middle East to seek
their release. However, DEBKAfile’s counter-terror sources report that officers
of the British secret service MI6, who are stationed in Rafah, were in constant
negotiations with the abductors who demanded a hefty sum in ransom. They
therefore knew exactly who they were, the Fatah-al Aqsa Brigades’ Black Panthers
represented by their leader Nidal An-Najar. For London, paying out ransom to
Palestinian terrorist kidnappers was a hard pill to swallow. This problem was
overcome when the Palestinian Authority offered to front for the British and
hand over the agreed sum. This made it possible to wind up the negotiations and
      obtain the Burtons’ freedom.
