Palestinian gunmen abduct Red Cross worker
By KHALED ABU TOAMEH
Palestinian gunmen abducted a German representative of the International
Committee of the Red Cross in Khan Yunis on Thursday afternoon and held him
for several hours before releasing him late at night without explanation.
Witnesses said Nicolai Panke, 43, was handing out food to families whose
homes had been destroyed by the IDF when he was forced into a car at
gunpoint by masked men.
The kidnappers later phoned the Red Cross to say that Panke was in good
condition. He was allowed to talk briefly with one of his colleagues over
the phone.
Panke "is responsible for our activities in those areas and was assisting
people who had their houses demolished. He was kidnapped by four armed young
men," said ICRC spokeswoman Alexandra Matijevic in the late afternoon. "We
are in contact with the Palestinian Authority, and we are not negotiating
directly with the abductors."
At around 11 p.m., Panke was released. PA security officials said the
kidnappers were former police officers who had been fired and wanted to use
their hostage to get their jobs back. About two months ago, the same group
abducted three Italians who were in the Gaza Strip to express solidarity
with the Palestinians, the security officials said. The Italians were also
released unharmed.
The security officials called the kidnapping a criminal act.
