"Populacja niedźwiedzi polarnych zmniejszyła się w ciągu ostatniego
dziesięciolecia o 14 proc. Według danych Greenpeace, w 2004 roku doliczono się
      zaledwie 950 osobników."

Black bears are dangerous. They can and do kill people.
        ========================================================

Black bears are curious and adaptable. They quickly become accustomed to human
activity, which leads to aggressive food gathering habits. Black bear have also
been known to stalk people – following them or circling to approach from ahead.
Bears will defend their territory – especially if it is a food source. Finally,
females (known as sows) are very aggressive in attacking real or perceived
        threats to their cubs.

These news articles represent only a few of the many recent black bear attacks,
but they will give you a pretty good representation of what these animals can
        do.

Bear snares set in wake of mauling death
        ===================================================
Last Updated Sat, 24 Sep 2005 09:53:06 EDT CBC News

Snares have been set in British Columbia to capture a bear officials believe
attacked and killed a man as he was walking back to a camp.

The body of 60-year-old Arthur Louie was found on Thursday, several hours after
his truck was found on a service road about 100 kilometres southeast of Prince
        George.

Senior conservation officer Bob Coyle suspects that Louie surprised a grizzly
bear sow and was dragged off into the bush. Two cubs were seen on the road
about 400 metres away by a helicopter.

"We are still currently investigating whether it was predatory or defensive,"
he said. "We do have some snares set in the area, so in the event that the
bears come back we can capture them."

The incident occurred about two-and-a-half weeks after a grizzly attack near
Burns Lake. That attack sent 13-year-old Christopher Solecki to B.C. Children's
        Hospital in Vancouver.

"Certainly, there are bear attacks because this is bear country," Coyle
said. "But we're not starting to worry that this is abnormal behaviour or
        anything like that."

Hunt Is on for Killer Bear in Tenn.
          =====================================================================
Tenn. Wildlife Authorities Hunt for Black Bear That Attacked Family,
          Killing 6-Year-Old Girl

BENTON, Tenn. Apr 14, 2006 (AP)— Using traps baited with honey buns and
doughnuts, wildlife officials Friday tried to capture a black bear that killed
a 6-year-old girl and critically injured her mother and 2-year-old brother.

The family had been at a pool below a waterfall in the Cherokee National Forest
on Thursday afternoon when the bear attacked, the Tennessee Wildlife Resources
          Agency said.

Witnesses said the bear snatched up the boy in its mouth as the mother and
other visitors at the Chilhowee campground tried to fend it off with sticks and
rocks, said Dan Hicks, a spokesman for the agency.

The 6-year-old girl ran away but was later found dead about 100 yards down the
trail, with a bear standing over her, authorities said.

"Allegedly, after the rescue squad found the little girl, one of the squad
members fired a shot from a small caliber handgun," Hicks said Friday. "We
don't know whether the bear was hit or not. There was no blood, but it chased
          it off."

Officials were still trying to piece together exactly what happened to spur the
attack, forestry spokeswoman Sharon Moore said. Rangers said the animal might
have been suffering from a disease that affected its behavior.

"It's a pretty rare thing, black bears generally don't attack people. I can't
think of any time other than just really rare circumstances," park ranger Monty
          Williams said.

Both the mother and boy were listed in critical condition Friday at a
Chattanooga hospital, but Hicks said both are expected to recover.

Hicks said the boy had puncture wounds on his head and claw marks on his body.
The mother also suffered puncture wounds when she was picked up and dragged by
          the bear.

"We have not been able to talk to her. She may not remember the attack at all,"
          Hicks said.

The little girl's body was taken to a mortuary in Cleveland, Tenn., funeral
home owner Ralph Buckner said. He declined to release her identity and no
family members were at the funeral home. Authorities also have declined to
release the names but have said the family was from Ohio.
