Cambodia trying to repair relations with Thailand

The Cambodian government says it has arrested 150 'extremists'
and will pay compensation for Wednesday's anti-Thai riots in
      Phnom Penh.

Those arrested include the manager of a radio station that is
alleged to have incited the torching of the Thai embassy by
wrongly reporting that Cambodian embassy officials had been
      killed in Thailand.

Mobs gathered in Phnom Penh to vent their anger over reported
statements by a Thai actress that Cambodia's treasured 800 year
old Angkor Wat temple belonged to Thailand.

A Cambodian foreign ministry statement has promised
compensation will be paid quickly and without conditions for
damage to the Thai embassy and Thai businesses.

The Cambodian government also has ordered Thai-owned companies
to be protected in the absence of their owners, who have fled
      the country.

Thailand estimates the damage bill will exceed $US23 million.

Radio Australia's Ta Rath, who is in the north western
Cambodian town of Siem Reap near Angkor Wat, says local people
are very nervous of foreign domination.

"Cambodia has emerged from the threat of war and you should
understand there are fears about being culturally and
economically swallowed by Thailand," he says.

      Thailand seals border

Thailand has responded to wave of anti-Thai sentiment by
barring Cambodians from entering the country across the Thai-
Cambodia border, and threatened to expel hundreds of thousands
      of illegal immigrants.

Thailand's defence minister Thamarak Isarangura says he has
ordered all checkpoints along the 800 kilometre border closed
      to Cambodian nationals.

All civilian flights between Phnom Penh and Bangkok have been
      suspended.

The governor of the Phnom Penh, Chea Sophara, says he is
concerned the riots will damage the city's vital tourist
      industry.

"We want to receive all the tourists to come and visit Phnom
Penh, but unfortunately the last two days may be difficult on
      this issue," he says.

Cambodia's ambassador to Thailand was earlier summoned to the
Thai foreign ministry where he received a letter of protest
from the Thai government and was asked to leave the country
      within 24 hours.

Cambodia's opposition leader, Sam Rainsy, has called on Thai
authorities to ensure the safety of tens of thousands of
      Cambodian migrant workers in Thailand.
