Based on Slavic legends and inspired by Polish culture, it is a modern vision of tradition, treated with the energy characteristic of an entertainment show for large audiences. Opentaniec was the idea of the Rev. Robert D. Gamble of the United States, who now resides in Poznań and is a fan of Poland and its traditions. The shape of the show is patterned after the Irish Riverdance and Lord of the Dance, while the dance, stage design, and the music itself tell a story based on the Slavic legend of the Flower in Fern. The action takes place on the shortest night of the year, during which the fern blooms. The courageous man that finds it can have anything he fancies, on one condition: he cannot share his joy. Jan encounters the cruel flower, and gives up true love to pursue an illusion. Opentaniec is a story of the struggle between good and evil, love and betrayal, with a straightforward, happy ending. It is a picturesque show-there are special effects, and the stage resembles Star Wars rather than the traditional Slavic world. "Opentaniec is a Polish-American production. Thanks to Robert Gamble, to whom we owe inspiration and financial aid, and a group of young Poles, a spectacle could be created which I hope is the beginning of a new quality on the Polish stage," says production manager Sebastian Mikołajczyk. Forty dancers had been selected from over 800 candidates. The core of the ensemble are young people for whom Opentaniec is their first encounter with the "big time." There are ballet dancers, acrobats, modern dancers and amateurs. Choreographer and director Jarek Staniek wanted to create a new form of traditional storytelling. "I think that the formula of the show, about the continuous struggle between opposite powers, will permit an original form of dance based on various dance techniques-from classical to modern, from capoiera to breakdancing," says Staniek, who began his career as a breakdancer. The music to Opentaniec is the work of Adam Sztaba and Tomek Filipczak. Sztaba says it was quite a challenge: the music is a combination of folk rhythms and contemporary music, which meant treading a fine line for the composer. The costumes were designed by Dagmara Czarnecka and Wojciech Czapla, who approached the task boldly. The clothes are a mixture of Slavic simplicity, traditional inspirations and pop culture. All taking place on an unusual set design by architect Mark Boretti, a Pole who has staged shows all over the world. Opentaniec's production cost over zl.2 million, which for Poland is an impressive figure. After the premiere, held Dec. 18 at Gdynia's Musical Theater, Opentaniec evoked great interest. Both fans and critics agree on one thing: Opentaniec is the first major domestic production to draw on Polish traditions and, at the same time, to be entertaining.
