Jeśli już to Hallowe'en. To uproszczenie `All Hallow Even'. Apostrof jest na
miejscu `v'. Chyba częściej pisze się w ogóle bez apostrofu.

In the year 835 AD the Roman Catholic Church made November 1st a church holiday
to honor all the saints. This day is called All Saint's Day. It used to be also
known as Hallowmas or All Hallows. Gradually, over the years, October 31st
became known as All Hallow Even, eventually All Hallow's Eve, Halloween, and
then Halloween as we know it today.

ines; as always i'm so impressed!! you've got a great wisdom on every one
topic. But the main qwestion still stays without an answer. what to do with
that apostrophe?? why this word is spelled this way???

Well, I guess one can always prove me wrong it they're persistent enough ;)

The apostrophe seems to be a mid stage between `All Hallow Even' and
`Haloween'. When they put the last words together it must have turned out that
there the `w'/`v' sounds one after the other didn't come together well. So the
latter one [in `even'] got chucked out. If you write a contraction you usually
show it with the apostrophe: is not = isn't. So I guess that's the case with
              Hallowe'en :)
