... they keep calling me...

[Nope, this rant is not going to be on the Nine Inch Nails fantastic
psychodelic track ;)]

Guess what? For the 3rd time this week I had to tell somebody on the other
end of the line that NO, I am NOT interested in those flamin' life insurance
policies. Where the hell do they get my phone number from?? The bloke was
clever. Started off as a telephone market researcher and then... it was too
late. For me, of course. No bloody escape.

You see, the problem with me is that I can't simply hang up on someone just
like that. Argh.... should've! 'Cause now I'm really annoyed. To the point I
could go off into a screaming tantrum. In other words I'm pissed off.

      Right you should have:)
Try it once. Then each next time is much better. Don't wait for them to make a pause, just say 'thank you' and hung up:)))

You can see it everywhere you look
      People just ain't no good

          up to a point.
what ines describes can still happen even with the above device installed.
someone doing "research", which turns out to be some bogus, fake hoax, is
entitled to harass and attempt to suck money from you. same with existing
accounts. representatives from these firms make phoney follow-up calls to just
check to see if you're happy with life, and..."oh, and by the way, have you
heard about our new scheme where we take you for all you've got and provide you
with nothing in return" or some such irresistable sales pitch.
I even get calls from a robot calling itself John Kerry (W never calls; guess
I'm just not a member of the elite). not even being the voting type I have no
hesitation in cutting the robot off.
with live-people though, it's a little different. I feel some sympathy for the
poor shmuck at the other end, some desperate soul driven to these horrible ends
just to make a few bucks. it seems doubtful that anyone would pursue this kind
          of work as a vocation.

Same here *sigh* I feel sorry for them and always picture myself being hung up
on. It's a terrible feeling. But as Amused wrote, I guess I have to learn how
to finish such an unwanted conversation.

When they call me (- and yes, they do! even though I am ex-directory!...) I
like to tease them... my response depends on how busy I am...

If I am not too busy I play with them, tease them. I keep them on the phone for
ages, building they hopes up just to say "no, thank you" right at the end
(followed by a statement such as: "I already have double-glazing/life-
insurance, etc. and I am VERY happy with it" or something down that line)...
I do this mainly because I find it hard to put the phone down on somebody. And
it works a treat as they are usually on commission so losing 10-15 minutes of
their time is no gain to them... they never call again.

When I am busy, then I simply say that I have not got any money and firmly
say: "no, thank you" (...sometimes followed by: "what part of <<no>> don't you
              understand???"). It works! :D

      My story is even better.
One day we decided to changed our phone number and we did. Ex-directory of
course. The horror started, phone calls every 5min. between 7am-1am. But the
worst thing of all is that there was no one on the other end, ever.
We called BT and registered with something, I don't remember the name. It
didn't help at all and after two weeks of constant answering the phone we had
      to change our number again.
Now only our family and friends now it. We don't give it to any companies any
more to avoid being registered with their marketing lists.

Two weeks! - you are very 'patient' people.

Not really... but we didn't have much choice. Next time I will know better.
