gwendal Re: perła renesansu - no jak? 23.09.04, 12:39 I'd say "a/the gem of the Renaissance" depending on the context. a gem = a jewel, a precious stone (Pol. klejnot) I haven't ever come across a phrase containing the word "pearl" in this context, but then, I may have not been lucky enough :-) Gwendal Odpowiedz Link Zgłoś

gwendal Re: perła renesansu - no jak? 23.09.04, 14:58 Doesn't it sound a bit pompous to you? Technically there's nothing wrong with it but, to my ears, there's a tinge of poshness to it. Gwendal Odpowiedz Link Zgłoś

miilusia Re: perła renesansu - no jak? 24.09.04, 00:29 - posh is not a derogatory term = something classy, elegant - pompous = pretentious (and so a different kettle of fish) Odpowiedz Link Zgłoś
gwendal Re: perła renesansu - no jak? 24.09.04, 06:28 Hmm, I suppose the word "posh" seems a bit problematic. In my circle of friends (middle-class Brits) it's always been very close in meaning to "toff(ee-nosed)" i.e. it carries rather negative undertones. It may be very much dependent on the attitude, beliefs and social position of the person using it - and my friends are certainly not very fond of the upper classes :-) Gwendal Odpowiedz Link Zgłoś
