The US election - a question.

IP: *.olsztyn.mm.pl 10.10.04, 18:51
On 2nd November Americans are not only choosing their president but also
electing reps to the House of Representatives as well as Senate (or part of
it).
Could anyone conversant with the US electoral system explain to me how it
works, please?

But, above all, keep it simple!

Here's a plain and simple explanation of the US election process from a web
site designed for kids of all grades. Click on grades 9-12 and this will walk
you through the entire process step by step in simple and managable terms.:)

          Thanks to both!

PS. What are the questions/options on the ballot paper? What does it look
          like?

That' a tough question. Each county decides the method of voting therefore the
            ballots have different look.
On the ballot you have the national candidates for the president. Then you have
statewide candidates for Senate, the Governor, Attorney General, etc. After that
you have the district candidates for the House.
There are a bunch of local candidates for county or municipality.
The list is long. unfortunately I was unable to find a copy of an actual ballot.
But I've found the map of the methods of voting.

Here are a few sample ballots..one for a California gubernatorial race (Oct. 7
2003). The article itself is about redesigning the ballot's appearance which
turns out to be quite a challange. There are some 133 names to place on one
              ballot!

The next one is the General Election official ballot for Nov 7th 2000.

the best sample ballot by far is on the following web site:

              www.election.co.riverside.ca.us/polls/root1102/ballots/004.pdf
...you need PDF (Acrobat Reader) to open it. It's also the most recent one for
              this upcoming election.

              :)
