As far as I know, in USA it`s possible to write "traveling" with double "l"

Can we do the same with other verbs?
swim = swiming
sit = siting
stop = stoping

???

      It's the other way round - in US you can write "traveling" with one "l"
      instead of the British English two.

      No, you can't do that with the verbs you mention. Fortunately. :)

      Traveling with one "l" is a possible American form, double "l" is the norm
      throughout the English-speaking world. In forms such as: stopping, sitting and
      swimming we MUST double the final consonant of the infinitive.

        Yes, that is, if the final syllable is stressed, which becomes clear with longer
        words.

          How about "travel" - which syllable is stressed? :)

          The rule is more complex here:

          1. If a word ends with consonant-vowel-consonant then the final consonant gets
          doubled. Check these verbs:
          * stop (T-O-P), hence stopping, stopped
          * sit (S-I-T), hence sitting
          * swim (W-I-M), hence swimming
          * shop (H-O-P), hence shopping, shopped
          * run (R-U-N), hence running
          * travel (V-E-L), hence travelling, travelled
          * permit (M-I-T), hence permitting

          BUT:
          2. The consonant doesn't get doubled if the final syllable is not stressed.

          * deVELop - developing (although L-O-P)
          * VIsit - visiting (although S-I-T)

          3. What's more, the final consonant doesn't get doubled if a word ends in -w
          or -y.

          * staY - staying
          * groW - growing

          Hope it helps :)
