London bombings

07.07.05, 21:53
My heart goes out to those that live in London and all the families whose
close ones are dead or fighting for their lives in the hospital! It was a
long time coming for the British people and we all knew it. It really was a
matter of time. I wonder when will all this end ? Anyone out there that lives
in London and can give us some direct feedback as to what it's like out there
right now...Alkida? Is that what people think?

All you folks out there, take care and may God bless you!!!

It was a long time coming...At first it was thought it was an electrical fault
on the train but as the news of the other explosions got out it became clear it
was a coordinated terrorist attack, similar to the one in Madrid. Three bombs
went off on underground trains - one of them ripping through the carriage, a
side wall and through to another carriage. One more blew off the top of a
double-decker bus near Russel Square, close to the British Museum; just a few
back seats remaining after the blast. The death tall is 37, about 700 people
have been injured, 300 of them seriously. Ambulances whizzed across town,
double-decker buses were used as make shit treatment 'rooms'. Those who were on
the trains in the affected carriages at the time described scenes of panic
after the explosion as the lights went out and the train filled out with
smoke. Survivors screaming, praying, breaking glass with bare hands to let the
oxygen in, becoming distressed and hysterical, passing out. All underground
services were suspended for fear of further attacks. The message from the
police was "Stay where you are". Lots of streets and main train stations were
cordoned off with ambulances and police tape, airy scenes. Quite a few
bewildered tourists taking photographs. The phones went down as everyone was
anxiously calling family and friends to check that they were safe. With all of
the transport disabled or stopped, many people were sent home from work to give
them a better chance of finding their way home. Thousands and thousands had to
walk across town for hours to get to an open main station.
There is an atmosphere of calm and seriousness. Quite a contrast to yesterday's
jubilations at winning the Olympic bid for hosting the 2012 games. London lived
for years with the possibility of terror attacks from the IRA and now the
general attitude is the terrorists are not going to stop people getting on with
        their lives.
The forensic people are sifting through the debris to find some hard evidence
of who was responsible for the attacks. There's talk that the bus explosion may
have been carried out by a suicide bomber, they are investigating the
possibility of other suicide bombers too. There's no answer to the question
whether the terrorists were foreign or home-grown. The consensus is that the
attacks have the hallmarks of an al-qaeda strike: multiple bombings, there were
no warnings and the attacks were aimed to kill/injure a large number of people.
People in the streets were saying that no amount of warning would have prepared
them for this. The city is in somber mood but will never cower to the
        terrorists, they will not win.

Thanks, Ms Jones! Nice to see you back! :) Are you OK? I can imagine what
you're going through. Just being that close to all this must've been a
nightmarish experience for you...I watched CNN but a lot of the footage repeats
itself time and again. I have all those scenes of chaos and panic almost
memorized. I can't stop thinking about the people being trapped and
suffocating, scared, injured, screaming in pain. Man, what's next...Who's
          next?...

Thanks for the report, Miss Jones. Since this IS an educational forum, I dare
say that "make shit" treatment rooms must have served their purpose today, of
          all days.
Alas, many could not make it to the proper facilities in time. The death toll
was quite tall for one commuter morning in London. My sympathy to all who were
there. Makes you think twice about taking the underground. Take care!
