          OK, here we go:

          Duff

          1. Slang for buttocks
          2. Decaying leaves and branches
          3. Dialectal variation of dough

          Duffy or duffer

          1. An incompetent or dull-witted person
          2. Slang for something worthless or useless

To go duffy - act in a dumb, silly manner

That's misspelled daffy, daffy. You duffed it pretty good.

There are spelling variations due to pronunciation and fact, that the origin
              goes back to Old English.
"duffer" - "daffier", different spelling, not pronunciation, you're right, I
              prefer "daffier".

                You "prefer" daffier?

You are wrong on all counts. To put the etymology aside
                for a while (you are most likely wrong on this one, too;
it's probably Middle or Modern English), where did you
see "daffy" spelled "duffy"? Any serious source?
                "Daffier" doesn't mean "duffer".
You don't pronounce "duffer" and "daffier" the same way.
Like a real daffy duffer, you are digging yourself deeper
                and deeper into a hole.

                  OK, OK, I give up!
Now, "duff" has unknown origin and can be a slang, as well as "duffer"- an
                  incompetent person, among others.
"Daffy" comes from Middle English "daffe" - foolish, silly.

Frankly, I'm appalled by everybody's lack of respect ;-) Duffy is a perfectly
respectable and fairly common Irish surname.
