what to do

I think my English is over FCE although I don't have a certificate. Should I
take this exam or practice a litte and take upper one?

and what do you need a piece of paper for?

because some stupid recruiters reject my applications only because this piece
of paper is missing. The fact that I have worked in foreign department for many
        years doesn't matter for them.

          VERY STUPID

You should take the TOEIC-test as it is the number one English Language
      Certificate worldwide:

Or practise your English here for free:

TOE... what? :) Is it? Could you please provide some
explanation to support your opinion? Or did you mean
        TOEFL? ;)

straus07: If I were you, I'd rather go straight to the
CAE. FCE is fairly too easy to be considered a
distinguishing proof of skills. It's a waste of time and
        money.
        • balbina_alexandra Re: You should take the TOEIC 26.07.03, 19:41
TOEFL and Toeic are two totally different exams. TOEFL is particularly
recommended to those who are planning to study in the US, it's necessary
there. I've heard a lot about TOEIC as the company where I work planned to
introduce it some time ago, but unfortunately the idea somehow didin't take
off. We - humble teachers - do not know why, but we suspect some disagreement
concerning the price, maybe the examination centre demanded too high a
price??? Who knows... I'm a bit disappointed, I think TOEIC would be a nice
alternative to Cambrigde exams (I'm slightly bored with them...).
As for your question, I strongly advise you to wait, prepare more and take
CAE. FCE has become too common, almost everyone has it nowadays and that's why
          it's stopped being respectable...

TOEIC and TOEFL are provided and administered by the same organization: EFL
TOEIC is more used in the business world whereas TOEFL caters more to people
            who want to study abroad.

            Details on TOEIC here:

Yes, in fact as soon as I followed the link I realised
that these are different things and "TOEIC" is neither a
typo nor the way Germans call TOEFL ;)

I was simply curious, because I thought I did a little
reconnaissance before choosing to pass CAE as the most
widely recognised proof of abilities in English, but I
have never heard of a TOEIC, which suggests that either
            (1) I did too little to investigate all the possibilities
or (2) this isn't really a popular certificate.

Anyway I'm happy that my ignorance turned out :)

I plan to pass CPE next year. Does anyone know of any
"alternative" certificates (on a corresponding level)
that I should consider instead? I'd be grateful for your
            suggestions in the matter.
            • Gość: english-test.net TOEIC no. 1 IP: *.dip0.t-ipconnect.de 26.07.03, 23:53
As for the TOEIC - it's the number one English Langauge Certificate with more
test takers last year than the Cambridge, LCCI and TOEFL together (over 2.8
              Million).
The number of people taking the TOEIC test has been increasing by 30% during
the last years so it's a question of time until TOEIC comes to Poland.

TOEIC is basic test of English for professionals (i.e. appreciated by all
employees worldwide). The thing is you can't fail it - it just tests the level
of your English. Some companies set standards for the no of points required for
                a given post.

If you like to be tested - as far as I know the examination center in Warsaw is
                at Lang LTC

As far as I know TOEIC is not yet available in Poland. (at least that's what
                  the official Europe website says)
Yet, your neighbours Lithuania and Germany offer the test and it's just a
question of time until someone in Poland wakes up too.

After the discussion here I sent a question to the ETS
regarding TOEIC examination opportunities in Poland.
Yesterday, they replied redirecting me to their office in
France. I mailed my question once again there and hope
that this time I will receive some reasonable response.
If I do, I'll let you know.
                    • Gość: english-test.net That'll be very interesting IP: *.dip0.t-ipconnect.de 30.07.03, 20:37
Yes, this will be very interesting as ETS is one the largest organizations in
                      the field worldwide...
