"Hallelujah"

03.10.08, 13:18
I've got a real problem with this song. Although I understand the
words I can't figure out what this song is about :). Probably I'm
not so good in reading poetry in English.
If you've got any ideas, help me please.

"I've heard there was
A secret chord
That David played, and
It pleased the Lord
But you don't really care
For music, do you?
It goes like this:
The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king
Composing Hallelujah
Your faith was strong
But you needed proof
You saw her bathing
On the roof
Her beauty and the
Moonlight overthrew you
She tied you to a kitchen chair
She broke your throne
And she cut your hair
And from your lips
She drew the Hallelujah
Maybe I've been here before
I know this room
I've walked this floor
I used to live alone
Before I knew you
I've seen your flag
On the marble arch
Love is not a victory march
It's a cold and
It's a broken Hallelujah
There was a time
You let me know
What's really going on below
But now you never show
It to me, do you?
I remember when
I moved in, you
Your holy dark
Was moving too
And every breath we drew
Was Hallelujah
Maybe there's a God above
And all I ever
Learned from love
Was how to shoot
At someone
Who outdrew you
It's not a cry
You can hear at night
It's not somebody
Who's seen the light
It's a cold and
It's a broken Hallelujah"

      Who sings this, Winky~?

Originally Leonard Cohen - he wrote it. But there are more than 120
        cover versions.

Cohen is well known for focusing on love/sex/religion and so on. I
believe this song makes several biblical references: so I guess the
best way to understand his thinking would be use a bible as a cross-
          reference. :-)

This I've found on the net:
"The original recording is noted for containing biblical references
in the lyrics, alluding to David's harp-playing used to soothe King
Saul (I Sam 16:23), and his later affair with Bathsheba after
watching her bathe from his roof (2 Sam 11:2). The line "she broke
your throne and she cut your hair" is a reference to the source of
Samson's strength from the Book of Judges chapter 16. The third
verse mentions "the name" (Tetragrammaton). In these instances, the
lyrics are overtly sexual. Jeff Buckley called his own rendition of
the song a homage to "the hallelujah of the orgasm".[4]"

      Sounds interesting :)
