higher education in the UK - age of students

Dear Jonathan,
can you tell me (generally) in what age British start their higher
education in the UK, then how long it takes to get e.g. BSc or MSc.
Let's assume that it will be Maths&Physiscs to study ( I mean
rather life sciences than for instance literature, art etc.).
Then, is the MSc degree required to start the PhD studies if the
graduate decides to run a doctoral studies immediately after the
univeristy graduation. And the last question: how long do the
doctoral studies last?
Thanks for your help,
Ann

      Hi Ann,
Please excuse my late reply-I arrived back from Turkey yesterday:

We generally start higher education at 18-though some students like
to take what's called a gap year and do things like travel around
the world for 12 months. It takes 3 years to complete a BSc though
in Ireland its 4 years for some reason. An MSc usually takes 1 or 2
years in Europe whilst in the USA and Japan a Masters program can
take anywhere from 1 to 6 years. Yes, the normal route to a PhD in
the UK is through a Masters-a PhD takes up to 6 years. Brian May-
form the rock group Queen-recently completed his PhD more than 30
years after he started his research!
