bloomed vs flourished

hello,
could you kindly explain me what is the difference between the words above?
in the sentece:
How have these organs survived, let alone ........, particularly on a Sunday?"
I put "bloomed" but in the key was answer "flourished" :-/ why?

      Hi,
      We tend to use "bloom" more for flowers. For example: "My roses are
      in full bloom now. They seem to bloom at different times every year."
