Ministers warn Alitalia could go bankrupt

Italian government ministers on Wednesday spoke bluntly for the first time of
the possibility that Alitalia, the national flag-carrier, could go bankrupt.

The statement came ahead of a board meeting scheduled by the group on
Thursday. Officials close to Alitalia, which is 62 per cent government-owned,
said its directors were considering three options: a request for a capital
increase; the appointment of extraordinary administrators; or liquidation.

The frank assessments of Alitalia's condition were made public after
government officials and company executives held a second day of talks with
trade unions that have vowed to resist job cuts as part of any rescue plan
for the airline.

The United Base Committee, one of the nine unions representing Alitalia
employees, said it planned to rally support among other unions for a general
strike in the entire Italian air transport sector.

After wildcat strikes last week caused the cancellation of more than 1,400
flights, Alitalia's management said its cash reserves had fallen to €200m
($241m) and said more labour unrest could finish off the company.

Government ministers are desperate not to see Alitalia collapse before voters
go to the polls in European Parliament and local government elections on June
12-13, but some say the unions must accept the need for sacrifices.

"If everyone understands that Alitalia could go bankrupt, then it will be
relaunched," Rocco Buttiglione, European affairs minister, told
reporters. "But if anyone deceives himself into thinking that it can't go
bankrupt, then it will."

Alitalia's management wants the unions to accept a restructuring plan that
would involve the loss of more than 3,000 jobs from the 21,700-strong
workforce.

Luigi Angeletti, leader of the UIL union, blamed the government for
Alitalia's crisis, saying: "One factor that has devastated Alitalia as a
company is that there are two or three different positions over what to do in
its principal shareholder, the government."

The coalition government has been divided over how much aid, if any, to
extend to Alitalia, and is conscious of the need not to flout EU competition
rules.

"There is an absolute need for an industrial recovery plan," Gianfranco Fini,
deputy prime minister, told reporters. "Only with a restoration of
productivity will the government be able to intervene with a decree on aid."

Alitalia's shares closed 10 per cent lower on Wednesday at €0.21.
