Malev posted a 2003 operating loss of 9.5 billion forint ($46 million),
according to its business report presented at the company's general meeting
last Friday. The Budapest Business Journal reported, quoting from the
document, that the Hungarian flag carrier generated around 111 billion forint
in net revenue. The pre-tax result was a loss of 13.5 billion forint. In 2002
Malev produced a pre-tax loss of 2.78 billion forint and an operating loss of
4.9 billion forint on turnover of 104 billion forint. It transported 8% more
passengers than last year, a period in which SARS and the war in Iraq
affected traffic. Its market share increased 0.5 points to 56.5%, according
to the report. The carrier, working to become an associate member of SkyTeam
by Nov., will face strengthening competition in its home market this year.
Besides the entry of Eastern European-based LCCs such as Wizz Air and
SkyEurope, Austrian Airlines Group plans to start direct services from
Budapest to European destinations by early 2005
